College students generally have much overhead to look after. Pocket money provided by their parents is never considered sufficient. Without an extra source of income, it is hard to meet up with additional expense such as movies, parties, and other entertainment activities.

It is for this reason that many students opt to work on their college or university campus itself. This makes it convenient, as the jobs are usually just 5 minutes away from the classrooms. There are a variety of job opportunities for students on the college campus. Students could be employed as research assistants by their professors. The cafeteria is another popular employment opportunity.

One of the most preferred jobs on any college campus are the ones in the library. From sorting and entering book titles in the library database to providing services as a librarian, the options are many. College students can also approach parents for tutoring their children. They can offer their children with peer tutoring. This would make their curriculum base stronger and also help children with their academics. A journalism student could try to work on the college newsletter. Students can always approach their professors in order to check up on new job opening in and around the college campus.

Students might also consider promotional campaigns that involve marketing and advertising different types of goods and services. They generally are paid on a daily basis.

It is important for the students to fix a suitable time for their work so that they do not neglect their studies and get bad grades. Students need to look out for jobs wherein they can operate with the convenience of flexible timings. As assignments and homework are an important part of any college curriculum, the job should ideally not exceed 4 to 5 hours on a weekday.

Being associated with many people in college always boosts a student’s chances of getting a good job. Socializing around the college campus exposes students to many new people and hence opens up newer avenues of finding the right job. Making money while studying in college not only acts as an extra source of income, but also makes the students financially independent.

Films on the Mind

First off I want to say that this has been in the works (well in my head) for almost six months, but i’ve never had the time to just sit down and think about what I wanted to include. I make no secret about my love for film here on the site, as it’s almost equal to my love of music. The connection I find between films and music is simple. It’s that one scene and that one song that if they’re both put to use correctly, than it can set that mood perfectly without there even being any kind of a hint as to what’s going on. You hear a song during a scene and if it has any kind of emotional impact, well you’ll remember both for that one moment forever.

Last year found a multitude of great film soundtracks (Marie Antoinette, Little Miss Sunshine and Stranger than Fiction to name a few) released. it’s nice to have such refreshing takes from the typical movie soundtrack. I can’t stand when movies are stocked full of whatever is popular in music at that moment, as it can hamper a film. It makes it connected to that period in time, to where it doesn’t age well. But if you were to truly put some care into what kind of music you want to represent your film than it could create something that is timeless and memorable like directors Wes Anderson, Quentin Tarantino and Cameron Crowe films.

The following list is nowhere near anything complete or absolute, but it’s a nice representation of some memorable scenes from recent films that had some emotional impact to me. A few I can connect with on a personal level, but some as you notice are just fun scenes that stood out in my mind when I was sitting at my desk thinking throughout the entire weekend. I tried to avoid film scores as much as possible and concentrated on songs that were not based on the films themselves. Hope you enjoy these, and i’d love to make another list with choices that all of you come up with.

The Film: Almost Famous
The Song: “Tiny Dancer” | Elton John
The Scene: This scene gets a lot of play as one of the most memorable, but really it’s just watching it gives you an honest to goodness feeling inside every time you see it. The film is a story based off the real experience of director Cameron Crowe as we follow a 15 year old rock fan in 1973 who gets to go on tour with an up and coming band as an assignment for Rolling Stone magazine. The moment is on a tour bus as emotions throughout are down and stress levels are high, but as “Tiny Dancers” comes on the radio, the mood changes and everyone comes together in a group sing-along. There you have a moment in cinema history that perfectly captures something that all of us can relate to in some manner.

The Film: American Psycho
The Song: “Hip To Be Square” | Huey Lewis
The Scene: I remember this film well just for the fact it’s the only one that managed to make me walk out of a theater before it finished. That was almost six or seven years ago, and I think it was a bit much for me at the time. I’ve watched it many times completely since then, and I still don’t know how that film got made really. There are several classic moments in this film, but one that stands out is a sequence where Patrick Bateman (Christian Bale) is in his apartment with work buddy Paul Allen (Jared Leto) and goes off about Huey Lewis and the News before landing a well-placed axe shot to the face of our 30 Seconds to Mars buddy Mr. Leto. It’s pretty gruesome but at the same time kind of horrifyingly hilarious.

The Film: Before Sunset
The Song: “Just in Time” | Nina Simone
The Scene: In a sort of sequel to one of my favorite films Before Sunrise, this is set nine years after the promise made by Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) to meet each other six months later in Vienna after their one night together. I won’t spoil what happened, but it’s pretty obvious what happened. The following scene comes after two just downright great moments with two in a car and afterwards where Celine played her “Waltz” to Jesse. After watching the two spill their guts out to each other, you just can’t help but want these two to be together although their circumstances would make such a thing impossible. What you have with the very last scene, is probably one of my favorite endings to a film ever as Celine dances to Nina Simone’s “Just in Time” and tells Jesse that he’s going to be miss his plane….well his answer just puts this big smile on my face every time i watch it.

The Film: Blue Velvet
The Song: “In Dreams” | Roy Orbison
The Scene: I really have no business liking Blue Velvet, or any David Lynch films for that matter. From Mulholland Dr. to Lost Highway, films that make my head want to explode. Not that Blue Velvet is that kind of film, but what you witness from the moment Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan) discovers the severed ear is a film that let’s say not everyone will really enjoy. The most memorable scene has to be where we have a confrontation between Jeffrey and the sex-crazed psycho Frank Booth (Dennis Hopper). A sequence that revolves around Roy Orbison’s “In Dreams” being lip-synched by Dean Stockwell and some of the most vulgar dialogue i’ve ever heard from Dennis Hopper. You really just have to watch it to see where i’m coming from.

The Film: Donnie Darko
The Song: “Notorious” | Duran Duran
The Scene: There are a lot of great music-in-movie moments scattered throughout Donnie Darko. From the opening scene with “The Killing Moon” by Echo and The Bunnymen to the scene at school that plays to “Head Over Heals” by Tears for Fears you just have a great overall soundtrack that wasn’t even officially released in the first place. I had a tough time deciding what to choose but the Sparkle Motion dance sequence just stood out in my mind and with “Notorious” being played over it just really just makes you cringe thinking that little girls do this sort of thing.

The Film: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Song: “Phone Call” | Jon Brion
The Scene: First off, I know that this is technically a part of the film’s score but this is one of my favorite films of the past decade so I can’t just leave this out like a piece of bologne. I just have to mention it because it’s just so honest about relationships that everyone can take something from this film that is relatable. Anyways, the scene involves our two main characters Joel (Jim Carrey) and Clementine (Kate Winslete) after a very uncomfortable night together in Clementine’s apartment. After a few drinks and things start to get more interesting, Joel decides to leave before getting Clementine’s number. As he leaves to walk to his car, she opens the window and screams for him to wish her a happy Valentine’s Day. It’s just a sweet moment between the two and this small piece of music from Jon Brion begins to play as we than watch Joel nervously call Clementine as he gets home. Something i’m sure we’ve all been through at some point in our lives.

The Film: Fight Club
The Song: “Where is My Mind’” | The Pixies
The Scene: I’m really getting tired of writing these descriptions so I think i’m going to start shortening them up because I just want to finish this. Anyways, after our lead character played by Edward Norton shoots himself in the face (yes) in order to get rid of his alter-ego played by Brad Pitt - we’re seen with him and his female companion as he grabs her hand and we watch them view a scene of the cities buildings crumble before them. A great scene, made the better by The Pixies track “Where is my Mind’”

The Film: High Fidelity
The Song: “Dry The Rain” | The Beta Band
The Scene: This is a film that every music lover has probably seen already, but this scene involves a moment where Rob Gordon (John Cusack) decides that he’s going to sell a few copies of The Three EPs by The Beta Band. The song plays and a customer hears it and starts to get into the song before asking “Who is this’” The Beta Band. “It’s good.” I know.

The Film: Kill Bill Vol. 1
The Song: “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” | Nancy Sinatra
The Scene: In the opening sequence where we see the bloodied bride played by Uma Thurman, we have an exchange between her and mentor/former lover Bill (David Carradine) that results in the bride receiving a not too kind bullet to the head before segueing into the opening titles where we hear the Nancy Sinatra track that’s so expertly placed by Quentin Tarrentino that fits the following sequence perfectly.

The Film: The Life Aquatic
The Song: “Staralfur” | Sigur Ros
The Scene: Towards the very end of the film we have the entire cast inside a submarine - minus Owen Wilson who had just previously been killed - as they come across the shark that killed the partner of Steve Zissou (Bill Murray). In a very poignant moment he says “I wonder if it remembers me’” as “Staralfur” plays during this and just stands out as such a great scene in my opinion.

The Film: Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
The Song: “Liar Liar” | Castaways
The Scene: Considered the UK equivalent of Quentin Tarantino, director Guy Ritchie’s film involving a high stakes card game gone wrong. Like Tarantino, the film has an excellent soundtrack as the tracks are well-placed throughout. One scene in particular involves a game of three card brag. it’s very simple with rotating camera views, slow-mo and quick shots but the use of the Castaways track just makes this an awesome scene that would otherwise seem pretty dull.

The Film: Lost in Translation
The Song: “Just Like Honey” | The Jesus & Mary Chain
The Scene: In the closing moments of the film, we have the a final encounter between Bob (Bill Murray) and Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) as they sadly speak to each other for what seems to be the last time in the crowded streets of Tokyo. In a nice, sleek little move by director Sofia Coppola, we don’t hear the exchange between the two as all we see is Charlotte’s facial expression as she sheds a tear over Bob’s shoulder. It’s a very touching moment, and made even more so with the use of “Just Like Honey” right after they part ways. For most it’s the first time they ever heard Jesus & Mary Chain, but really what better way to be introduced to this amazing band then at that very moment.

The Film: Ocean’s Twelve
The Song: “The a la menthe” | Nikkfurie
The Scene: This scene doesn’t really have any significance besides the fact that it’s just a ridiculous scene involving a thief (Vincent Cassel) break dancing through some lasers. Seriously, that’s it. The song just took me forever to find because it’s not on the actual soundtrack….and it’s good. So basically lasers = break dancing = $$$ (j/k).

The Film: Punch-Drunk Love
The Song: “He Needs Me” | Shelly Duvall
The Scene: In a very uplifting moment of the film, Barry (Adam Sandler) draws his courage to stand up to one of his sisters whom he constantly receives shit from. It’s a moment of liberation, the point at which he would no longer put up with it anymore, he basically let’s everything out on the phone because he wants the number of mutual friend that he’d been seeing. From that moment on, the track from Shelly Duvall plays through a wonderful sequence where he flies to Hawaii to see the one important woman in his life.

The Film: Reservoir Dogs
The Song: “Stuck in the Middle With You” | Stealers Wheel
The Scene: This is just a prime example of hearing a song during a scene and it forever being associated with that moment. Everytime I listen to it I just cringe because I think about that moment between Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsden) and his torturing of his little police officer buddy. The result is the cutting of the aforementioned polcie officer’s ear and later being doused with gasoline all of this happening while Mr. Blonde dances along to “Stuck in the MIddle With You”. What’s great about that scene is that you don’t really see the actual cutting of the ear happening as it happens off-screen. In my opinion it makes the scene that much more effective as you sit there imagining how it’s taking place.

The Film: Shaun of the Dead
The Song: “Don’t Stop Me Now” | Queen
The Scene: Considered a cult classic by many since it’s release, the film by Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. It’s one that I absolutely love despite my unhealthy fear for all things zombie as it was still horror-ish while still being hilarious. A great scene here involves our heroes dispatching the zombie Bernie the Bartender with pool sticks in sync with a juke box playing Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now”. It’s a great little sequence that results in the the juke box getting destroyed by tossing the zombie’s head into the machine.

The Film: Silence of the Lambs
The Song: “Goodbye Horses” | Q. Lazzarus
The Scene: I wasn’t planning on adding this to the list, but every time I watch this film and see thsi scene…..it really just creeps my shit out every time. It’s seriously fucked up, but I can’t help but notice how well that song played during it. Anyways, it involves serial killer Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine) as he sits in front of a mirror and applies makeup to his face. You notice the scalp of another woman over his own, and as he dances around and tucks his stuff he utters to himself, “Would you fuck me’ I’d fuck me. I’d fuck me so hard.” Once you see this scene, you will never forget it. It’s seriously so fucked up.

The Film: Snatch
The Song: “***kin’ In The Bushes” | Oasis
The Scene: This takes place during a really well-filmed fight scene involving Mickey (Brad Pitt) in a bare-knuckle street fight. It’s a very high-stakes match as lives are on the line if Mickey doesn’t go down in the fourth round like he’s supposed to. Though we all know that throughout the whole film he’s ignored the rules set before him and proceeded to knock the ever living fuck out of everyone in the ring. You could really go with this track by Oasis that starts in the beginning of the fight or the track by Massive Attack that starts as soon as he knocks the guy out in the ring. Either way, great scene and music.

The Film: The Royal Tenenbaums
The Song: “These Days” | Nico
The Scene: This is one of those scenes that you see and you just think to yourself that this is just perfect. No dialogue is needed as the moment you see Margot (Gwyneth Paltrow) slowly get off the bus and “These Days” start to play, you just can’t find a better music-in-film moment. Perfect! Another great scene involves a very dark moment where Ritchie Tenenbaum (Luke WIlson) attempts to committ suicide and “Needle in the Hay” by Elliott Smith plays during it. A very chilling moment that should also be mentioned from this wonderful film.

The Film: Trainspotting
The Song: “Lust for Life” | Iggy Pop
The Scene: This can be heard in the first first scene of Danny Boyle’s film that gave us filthy toilet diving and a look into the lives of heroin addicts as this track plays during the memorable “Choose Life” monologue by Renton (Ewan McGregor). Ok, i’m really tired of typing.

The Film: Vanilla Sky
The Song: “Where Do I Begin” | The Chemical Brothers
The Scene: I’ll be honest that this film isn’t really that great, but it contains a very great soundtrack that’s put to good use. In a dream sequence towards the beginning of the film, we see the messiah of Scientology (Tom Cruise) run through what appears to be a deserted Times Square in New York City. A great scene as this Chemical Brothers track plays throughout. It’s just too bad the rest of this one stunk.

Now I am married to a wonderful human female who is as independent and opinionated as I am. She was nwever married while she lived and passed her time on Terra like many of you quietly going unnoticed by the flash of camera bulbs and absent from the covers of magazines and dailies. She was a normal person who had normal desires and wanted merely to be safe from harm and comfortable in her life until alas on aone fateful day her life was cut short.

Carol’s death came out of nowhere she couldn’t have possibly seen it coming it wasn’t as if she walked the verdant fields of Terra with a body scanner telling her the condition of her descending aorta. One minute she was a living breathing human working as a research assistant in the Bismarck, North Dakota public library and the next second she was on the floor of that lovely establishment dead from a massive stroke. Carol Henninger, dead at the age of 41.

I go into such intimate personal detail to make a point about fear which is the driving force behind the midterm elections coming up and I felt there needed to be a form of clarity made on such a fun and scary holiday for human beings in America. There is a laundry list of “scare” tactics being used by people who generally have very little to fear. Those people are the GOP operatives who get GOP candidates elected. Neither of these well paid groups have nay of the basic, read, normal fears average Americans have. They want not for food nor shelter, some have more than one home or ebven properties that they generate income from. They want not for initmacy physical or intellectual they have a mighty Internet at their disposal and all manner of muscled men and voluptuous women, a phone call well placed or an e-mail well sent away, ready and professionally willing to sweep away the ennui of their betrothed’s fading beauty.

I cannot separate the facts presented here about the right wing from similarities on the left save for one critical element. The right wants you to fear, terrorism, torture, arrest for treason, energy costs, airport security, taxes, and the especially want you to fear a 66 year old grandmother from California. While the democrats want you to hope. Hope it is time for change and oversight of a runaway executive branch, hope that you were not suckered into believing that a $20 tax cut when reversed will somehow become a $2000 tax increase and a hope that Big Pharma will get out of the shareholder ass kissing business and get back into the noble work of small margin big return research and development and eschew big marketing Madison Avenue marketing and decrese the number of Barbie doll hooker reps it sends out to physicians nation wide.

The choice is yours, you have one week upon which to ponder. Choose then, in that private moment, and choose well. Choose Hope.

Latest case in point: the insufferable Jim Carroll, a former priest and current whiner about all things orthodox, writes in the Boston Daily Worker err Globe:
The first vote taken by the bishops of the Second Vatican Council in 1962 concerned liturgical reform, centering on use of the vernacular at Mass. If the Council fathers had voted against worshipping in language ordinary believers could understand, the revolutionary impulse driving that Council would have been stopped dead in its tracks, but the tally was overwhelmingly in favor. The Latin Mass was finished. With that single vote, the Council set loose a current of change that is still running.

Once Catholics entered into the mystery of the Mass as literate participants instead of as dumb spectators, an unprecedented renewal took hold. The vitality and warmth of today’s typical liturgy, involving intelligible encounters with sacred texts, has Catholic parishes surprisingly full, even in a time of widespread disillusionment with clerical leadership. The structure of order that was embodied in the old tradition, and its language, turned out to be dead letters in comparison to the meaning and nourishment that now regularly draw Catholics to the Eucharistic meal. What Tyndale did for English, English has done for American Catholicism. And so with other vernaculars, elsewhere.
So that’s why Mass attendance is at an all-time low ‘

One still hears of Catholic nostalgia for the Latin Mass. Classicists regret the loss of the Church’s museum function. Esthetes decry the banalizing of liturgy in which all worshippers are fully able to participate. More pointedly, reactionaries have never stopped campaigning for the restoration of Latin, understanding its twin significance as symbol and pillar of the old order. Unsurprisingly, that campaign has been reinvigorated lately, with a blessing from Pope Benedict — a futile shoring up of a rapidly collapsing clericalism. But Catholic Latin is a lost cause. For which one says, “Deo Gratias.”

I’m not fixated on Latin or even the Tridentine Mass - even the flawed Pauline Mass could be perfect within its confines every time. The problem we have is the enemy in our midst. The Carrolls, Chittisters, Gumbletons. The dissenters, heretics, pantheists, neo-Pagans and syncretists. The horizontal people. The “meal” people. There are three segments in the Church - the vast majority of people who don’t know much about anything, the more traditional oriented people and the progressives who - ironically - don’t want to give up the Catholic Church for its institutional structure and prestige but other than that aren’t Catholic in the least. And, they usually hate Latin and the Tridentine Mass. Vernacular in itself isn’t bad, but, in this age it means an opportunity to inject the relativist, progressive agenda.

If the Catholics of ages past were so ignorant and today’s Catholics are such good little conscious participants, how come the former went to Mass and knew their Catechism quite well whereas the latter may never even have seen a Catechism - or a church from the inside ‘

On a more general level, a trivial Mass destroys the sense of the sacred. That leaves room for those vultures. Once God is shoved to the sideline, once we’re all horizontal, we’re more open to listen to what they have to say. Once everything is community, and God is, in essence, an empty husk, there is room to fill up that husk with their agenda. Sure, it’s madness. But, make no mistake: it’s madness with a method.

What then we have in the gospel testimony to the virginal conception is the notion that the Son of God enters into the closest possible union with humanity in its falleness in such a way that by the Spirit in the moment of conception that humanity is, by union with the Son of God, through the Spirit, sanctified in order that there may be in him the beginning of a new and holy creation. And the Spirit of God is however mysteriously active in this right from the very beginning of the human life of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Holy Spirit is present and active from the very inauguration of the life of Jesus so there is no point of Jesus existence as the Son of God incarnate in which the Holy Spirit is not already both present and active. The Gospel of the Holy Spirit’s Love

Does the Holy Spirit love us’
There can be but one answer to this question. Yes! He does. As truly as the Father loveth us, as truly as the Son loveth us, so truly does the Spirit love us. The grace or free love which a sinner needs, and which has been revealed and sealed to us through the Seed of the woman, the “Word made flesh,” belongs equally to Father, Son, and Spirit. That love which we believe to be in God must be the same in each Person of the Godhead, else the Godhead would be divided; one Person at variance with the others, or, at least, less loving than the others: which is impossible.

Twice over it is written, God is love (1 John 4:8,16); and this applies to each Person of the Godhead. The Father is love; the Son is love; the Spirit is love. The Trinity is a Trinity of Love.

When it is said, “God is a Spirit” (John 4:24), the words refer to each Person. If we lose sight of the love of one, we shall lose sight of the love of all. That which is the glory of Jehovah, is the glory of each of the three Persons. Let us beware of misrepresenting the Trinity by believing in unequal love, a love that is not equally large and free in each.

When it is said, “God is light” (1 John 1:5), we know that these words are true of the whole three Persons; not merely of the Father or of the Son. The Father is light; the Son is light; the Spirit is light. As of light, so of love; and he who would doubt that the Spirit is love, must needs also doubt that the Spirit is light. That which is written of God, is written of the Spirit of God. That “name” which God has proclaimed as His, belongs to the Spirit as certainly as to the Father and the Son,- “The Lord God, merciful and gracious, long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands” (Exo 34:6). Shall we rob the Holy Spirit of that blessed name’ His personality claims it; and the gracious characteristics which go to make up the name, are as much those of the Spirit as those of the Father and the Son. The personality of the Spirit requires that what is thus written of one should be applicable to all. We are wont to say of the three Persons, “They are one God, the same in substance, equal in power and glory.” If so, then the love which we affirm of the whole we must affirm of each. They must be equal in love, as well as in “power and glory.”

Let not the old question of unbelief come in “How can these things be’” We cannot “find out the Almighty unto perfection” (Job 11:7); but shall this inability of ours lead to doubt’ Shall it not rather lead to faith’ Shall we rob the Spirit of His love, because we cannot understand the deep wonders of Godhead’ Shall we not rather say, If there be love in God at all, there must be love in the Spirit’ For to Him it is given to carry out in human hearts the purposes of redeeming love, in striving, awakening, drawing, convincing, quickening, comforting; so that it is impossible to suppose that His love can be less warm, less tender, less large, less personal than the love of the Father and the Son.

Laying aside the disputes of intellectual pride, the questionings of vain human reason, the puzzling suggestions of unhumbled self-righteousness, the fond endeavours to comprehend the hidden things of God, the stubborn determination not to believe unless we see “signs and wonders” (John 4:48), let us recognize in that simple formula, God is love the foundation of our faith as to the Spirit’s gracious character, and the solution of all our perplexities as to His personal and ineffable love. True, He did not take flesh for us; He did not become poor for us; He did not die for us; He did not weep for us the human tears which the Son of God wept over Jerusalem; but none the less does He love us; and none the less is His work for us and in us the work of love,-love without bounds, or change, or end.

We are baptized “in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost” (Matt 28:19). That threefold name is love; or rather, that one name in its threefold connection with the three Persons, unfolds itself as the expression of the threefold love of Father, Son, and Spirit. The name thus named upon us is the divine declaration and pledge to us of “the love of the Spirit.” Our baptism says, not only, “God the Father loveth us,” not only, “God the Son loveth us”; but also, “God the Spirit loveth us.” We are baptized into the love of the Spirit.

Perhaps much of our slow progress in the walk of faith is to be traced to our overlooking the love of the Spirit. We do not deal with Him, for strength and advancement, as one who really loveth us, and longs to bless us, and delights to help our infirmities (Rom 8:26). We regard Him as cold, or distant, or austere; we do not trust Him for His grace, nor realize how much He is in earnest in His dealings with us. More childlike confidence in Him and in His love would help us on mightily. Let us not grieve Him, nor vex Him, nor quench Him by our untrustfulness, by disbelieving or doubting the riches of His grace, the abundance of His loving-kindness.

He is no mere “influence,” but a living “Personality”; and there is a vast difference between these two things. An “influence” cannot love us, and we cannot love an “influence.” If there is to be love, there must be personality; and, in this case, it must be the personality of love.

The fresh breath of spring is an influence, but not a personality. It cannot love us nor call on us to love it. The voice of that which we call “nature” is an influence, but not a personality. There can be no mutual love between it and us. But a being with a soul is a personality, not an influence; and the love of man or woman is a personal thing, a true and real affection-one eye looking into another, and one heart touching its fellow. So is it with the love of the Spirit.

There is a personality about Him passing all the personalities of earth,-passing all the personalities of men or angels; and it is this divine personality that makes His love so precious and so suitable, as well as so true and real. There is no reality of love like that of the Spirit. It has nothing in common with the coldness or distance of a mere “influence.” It comes closely home to a human heart, because it is the love of Him who formed the heart, and who is seeking to make it His abode for ever.

The proofs of His love are abundant. They are divine proofs; and, therefore, assuredly true. It is God who has given them to us, that no doubt of the Spirit’s love may ever enter our minds. They are spread over all Scripture, in different forms and aspects. While the Bible was meant to be specially the revelation of the Son of God, it is also the revelation of the Holy Spirit. He reveals Himself while revealing Christ. He utters His own love while showing us the love of the Father and the Son.

The thoughts of the Spirit are thoughts of love.
The apostle uses the words, “the mind of the Spirit,” in connection with His gracious intercession (Rom 8:26,27); and we know that intercession implies love. The “groanings that cannot be uttered” are awakened in us by the Spirit in His love. He thinks of us; and His thoughts are “precious” (Psa 139:17). Yes; He thinks of us; and His thoughts are thoughts of peace (Jer 29:11). The Bible is filled with the thoughts of the Spirit; and they are love. They breathe in every page of Scripture; for holy men of God “spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”

The ways of the Spirit are the ways of love.
His manifold dealings with the sons of men, in “opening hearts” (Acts 16:14), teaching, sanctifying, chastening, are the dealings of love,-love which many waters cannot quench, and which the floods cannot drown. The faintest touch of His hand is the touch of love. The gentlest whisper of His voice is the whisper of love. All His dealings from day to day, whether of cheer or of chastisement, whether of warning or of welcome, are those of love. In a thousand ways He beckons us to come to the Cross; He draws us, unconsciously and imperceptibly, but irresistibly, away from sin and self to God and heaven. He has not, indeed, human tears to shed, like the son of God when he wept over Jerusalem; but not the less are His yearnings true and tender, and all His ways toward us are ways of unutterable compassion (see Gen 6:3; Psa 51:11,12; Isa 55:8). He is “very pitiful, and of tender mercy.”

The works of the Spirit are the works of love.
When He “garnished the heavens” (Job 26:13), it was the work of love. When he moved upon the face of the deep (Gen 1:2), it was in love. When He came upon holy men of old, it was in love. When He wrote the Scriptures, it was in love,-love to us. When He anointed Jesus of Nazareth to preach the gospel to the poor, it was in love to us. When He fulfills His office of “guiding into all truth,” it is in love. When He opens eyes and hearts, it is in love. When He chastens, it is in love. When He comforts, it is in love. When He sheds abroad the love of God in our hearts, it is in love. When He, as one with the Father and the Son, wrote the seven epistles of the Revelation, it was in love,-as the close of each of them shows: “He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches” (Rev 2:7). His works in the soul of man, in regenerating, upholding, and perfecting, are the works of love,-love like that of Christ, “that passeth knowledge”: love to the chief of sinners; love to those who have vexed and resisted and quenched Him; love which says, “How shall I give thee up, Ephraim’ how shall I deliver thee, Israel’” (Hosea 11:8).

The words of the Spirit are the words of love.
That which we call “the word of God” is specially the Spirit’s word: and it overflows with love; love which, while it condemns the sin, presents pardon to the sinner; love which, while it spreads out before us “the exceeding sinfulness of sin,” proclaims aloud, to the guiltiest of the guilty, free forgiveness and “deliverance from the wrath to come.” The gospel of Christ contains in it the good news of the Spirit’s love. “He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost” (Matt 3:11) are the words in which is described the fitting out of men for preaching the good news; and in this baptism we have the manifestation of the Spirit’s love. He baptizes because He loves. He sends out men to tell of His love; and the baptism with which He baptizes them is to fit them for this message of love. By this baptism the words of love are put into their lips; and these words are truly those of the Spirit Himself, from whatever lips they may come, by whatever pen they may be written down. They are the words of sincerity and truth. He means what He says when He sends out His servants with the language of love upon their tongues.

Hear some of His words of grace,-grace as boundless and as suitable as that of the Father and the Son; grace which has lost none of its largeness or freeness by the lapse of ages or the desperate resistance of human hearts:
“Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases; who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies” (Psa 103:3,4); “O Lord, I will praise thee: though Thou wast angry with me, Thine anger is turned away” (Isa 12:1); “Seek ye the Lord while He may be found” (Isa 55:6); “Though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool” (Isa 1:18); “As I live, saith the Lord God, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked” (Eze 33:11); “I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love” (Hosea 11:4); “Who is a God like unto Thee, that pardoneth iniquity” (Micah 7:18); “The Lord is good; a stronghold in the day of trouble” (Nahum 1:7); “How great is His goodness” (Zech 9:17). These are the Spirit’s own words; and He writes them as the witness for God, the revealer of the divine character, the Unfolder of the love of Father, Son, and Spirit. They are the words of the Spirit, spoken before the Son of God came into the world to reveal and to embody in Himself the love of God to man. The New Testament is yet more abundant in its utterances of love: and in every one of them the Spirit has His part: till all is summed up in the wondrous words which time cannot weaken, and which long use cannot make stale: “The Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely” (Rev 22:17).

The Holy Spirit is no mere mechanical agent in the great work of a sinner’s deliverance, and of the Church’s upbuilding, obediently doing the work appointed to Him. “I delight to do Thy will” is as true of the Spirit as the Son. He loves the sinner; therefore He lays hold of him. He pities his misery; therefore He stretches out the hand of help. He has no pleasure in his death; therefore He puts forth His saving power. He is longsuffering and patient; therefore He strives with him day by day; and though “vexed,” “resisted,” “grieved,” and “quenched,” He refuses to retire from, or give up, any sinner on this side of eternity. The extent to which we resist Him, and the amount of His forbearing love, we cannot know. This only we may say, that our stubbornness is something infinitely fearful and malignant, while His patient grace passeth all understanding.

We are little alive to the injury we do to ourselves by any misunderstanding as to the mind and the work of the Spirit. The injustice which we do to Him is great; and the wrong which we inflict upon ourselves is no less so. No mistakes as to the Spirit’s gracious character can be trivial or harmless. To regard Him as “austere,” or “hard,” or inaccessible, or needing to be persuaded to do His work in us, is to treat Him as at variance with the Father and the Son; slow to carry out the great purpose of divine love, in which purpose the three Persons of the Godhead are equally concerned. To raise questions as to the riches of His grace is to misread Scripture, and to put a dark and false construction upon His testimony for Christ, as well as upon His dealings with the sons of men,-His dealings with those who have been saved, as well as with those who are lost. For what do the saved ones not owe to His love; and what would that love not have done for the lost, had they not stubbornly set it at nought to the last! “How often would I have gathered thy children” were the words which accompanied the tears of the Son of God over the rebellious city; and they are words equally expressive of the Spirit’s feelings toward the stout-hearted of every age and nation.

Imperfect views of the Spirit’s character may not be regarded by some as serious or fatal, but it is hardly possible that they can be entertained without exercising a darkening and deadening influence upon the soul: not in the same way as defective views of Christ’s work affect us, but still with a most evil result both upon the conscience and the heart,-as if there were something in the Spirit which repelled us, whatever there might be in Christ to attract us; as if the light which the Cross throws upon the love of the Spirit were not quite in harmony with that which it reveals of the love of Christ; as if the Spirit were not always as ready with His help as is the Son.

All wrong thoughts of God, whether of Father, Son, or Spirit, must cast a shadow over the soul that entertains them. In some cases the shadow may not be so deep and cold as in others; but never can it be a trifle. And it is this that furnishes the proper answer to the flippant question so often asked, Does it really matter what a man believes’ All defective views of God’s character tell upon the life of the soul and the peace of the conscience. We must think right thoughts of God if we would worship Him as He desires to be worshipped; if we would live the life He wishes us to live, and enjoy the peace which He has provided for us.

The want of stable peace, of which so many complain, may arise from imperfect views of the Spirit’s love. True, our peace comes from the work of the Substitute upon the cross, from the blood of the one sacrifice, from the sinbearing of Him who has made peace by the blood of the cross. But it is the Holy Spirit who glorifies Christ to us, and takes the scales from our eyes. If then we doubt His love, can we expect Him to reveal the Son in our hearts’ Are we not thrusting Him away, and hindering that view of the peace-making which He only can give’ Trust His love, and He will make known the Peacemaker to you. Trust His love, and He will show the precious blood by which the guiltiest conscience is purged, and the peace which passeth all understanding is imparted. He is the Spirit of peace, and His work is the work of peace. His office is to make known to us the Prince of Peace. Can there be peace without the recognition of the Holy Spirit’s love’ Can there fail to be peace when this is recognized and acted on’ Doubts as to the love of the Spirit must inevitably intercept the peace which the peace-making cross presents to us.

Perhaps the want of faith, which we often mourn over, may arise from our not realizing the Spirit’s love. “Faith [no doubt] cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God”: yet it is the Holy Spirit who shines upon the word; it is He who gives the seeing eye and the hearing ear. Under the pressure of unbelief, have we fled to Him and appealed to His love’ “Lord, I believe; help Thou mine unbelief,” may be as aptly a cry to the Spirit as to the Son of God. He helpeth our infirmities; and in the infirmity of our faith He will most assuredly succour us. It is through Him that we become strong in faith; and He loves to impart the needed strength. He giveth to all men, liberally, and upbraideth not. Yet in our dealings with Him regarding faith, let us remember that He does not operate in some mystical or miraculous way, as if imparting to us a new faculty called faith; but by taking of the things of Christ and showing them to us; so touching our faculties by His mighty yet invisible hand, that, ere we are aware, these disordered souls of ours begin to work aright, and these dull eyes of ours begin to see what was all along before them, but what they never had perceived, “the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Thus He works in us, often slowly and imperceptibly, but with divine power, making us to understand the gospel and to draw out of it that light and life which it contains for the dead and the dark. Looking at the cross, under the Spirit’s enlightenment, we grow in faith. For never does He produce or increase faith in us without keeping our eye steadfastly fixed upon the great redeeming work of the incarnate Son. He is not the Spirit of unbelief or bondage, but of faith and liberty; and His desire is that we should be delivered from unbelief and bondage.
He loves us too well to be indifferent to our remaining in distance or in distrust. He longs to see us children of faith, not of unbelief; to make us strong in faith; to remove whatever from within or without hinders its growth. Trust His love for the increase of faith; for deliverance from the evil heart of unbelief; for revealing to you the bright object of faith,-Christ, and “God in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not imputing unto men their trespasses.” As truth is the foundation of faith, so, as “the Spirit of truth,” He guides us out of error into truth, and thus leads us out of unbelief into faith; making us to see that the root of what we called our want of faith, was not that we were believing the right thing in a wrong way (as is so often said), but that we were not believing the right thing, but something else which could not bring rest to us in what way soever we might believe it.

Perhaps our want of joy may arise from our over-looking the love of the Spirit. Peace is one thing; joy is something more,- “joy unspeakable and full of glory.” Assuredly He is the Spirit of joy, and as such delights to impart His joy. He who, by the lips of His Apostle, said, “Rejoice in the Lord always,” wants to see you a joyful man. Will you trust Him for this’ Will you rest in His love for this gift’ Do not say, Joy is a secondary thing: a man may be a Christian without joy; some of the best of God’s people have gone mourning all their days. These are poor excuses for not possessing what God wants you to possess, and what would make you ten times more useful to all around. God wishes you to be joyful. Your testimony to God is imperfect without joy. Cultivate joy; and in order to do so effectually, take firmer hold of the Spirit’s power, and rest more implicitly in His love. He loves you too well to wish you to be gloomy. Be filled with the Spirit and you will be filled with joy. Joy is a great help in living a holy and consistent life. Holiness is joy, and joy is holiness. Accept the Spirit’s love for both of these.
The “seal of the Spirit” (Eph 1:13); the “witness of the Spirit” (Rom 8:16); the “indwelling” of the Spirit (Rom 8:11); the “inworking” of the Spirit (Eph 1:19); the “help” of the Spirit (Rom 8:26); the “liberty” of the Spirit (2 Cor 3:17); the “strengthening” of the Spirit (Eph 3:16); the “fullness” of the Spirit (Eph 5:18); the “teaching” of the Spirit (John 14:26); the “baptism” of the Spirit (Mark 1:8);-all these are most closely connected with the “love of the Spirit”; and he who would separate them from that love, would rob them of all their meaning and power and consolation.It is the loving Spirit that seals, and witnesses, and indwells, and inworks, and helps, and liberates, and strengthens, and teaches, and baptizes. So that in seeking these blessings we must ever remember that we are dealing with one whose love anticipates our longings, and on whose side there exists no hindrance to our possessing them all. Nowhere in Scripture has God led us to suppose that the Holy Spirit would be awanting to us in any time of need, or that we could be beforehand with Him in any desire of ours for any spiritual blessing. “If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children; how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask Him’” (Luke 11:13).

In our day, when that which is miraculous or supernatural is suspected or scorned, it is not easy even to gain a hearing for such truths. The Holy Spirit, we may say, is discarded as the most incredible part of the supernatural and impersonal. He Himself is regarded as an airy nothing, or as mist; and His direct and divine agency is treated as the dream of diseased enthusiasm. The removal of the supernatural from religion means specially the removal of the Spirit. To retain Him personally in our theology is considered to be retaining the most incredible part of the supernatural,-the most visionary article in our creed.

Hence the need of bringing fully into view both His personality and His character. That modern unbelief should dislike the whole subject, and treat it as incompatible with reason, and therefore incapable of proof, as being wholly beyond the range of our senses, need not surprise us: nor would we attempt to meet Rationalism on its own ground. But what we say is this: Our information regarding the Holy Spirit must come wholly from revelation; and the question is, Does the Bible bear us out in the above statements’ It certainly does seem to contain the doctrine we have been affirming. Its Author evidently meant us to accept that doctrine as true. If that doctrine cannot be true, it must be honestly struck out of the Bible; not by explaining texts away, or misinterpreting whole chapters, but by boldly affirming that Scripture is inaccurate. The words regarding the Spirit are too plain to be diluted into unmeaning figures. He who inspired the Bible has used language that cannot be mistaken. He has not left us in any doubt as to what He intended. Hence the quarrel of unbelief is a quarrel with revelation, and more specially with the Author of revelation. This is the real point at issue in these days, in the controversy with Rationalism.

The doctrine of the Holy Spirit’s person and work must stand or fall with the Bible.
If it is incredible, then Scripture has utterly deceived us, and the God who made us has given us a book, as the revelation of divine truth, which contains what no man ought to believe or can believe. If the innumerable references to the Spirit be mere figures of speech (Orientalisms) meaning nothing real, then to accept them as literal, and to believe in a personal Spirit, must be pure fanaticism; and as to such a thing as the love of the Spirit, only visionaries or mystics would accept it.

Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure; and the Word of God is true and real. Heaven and earth may pass away, but one jot or one tittle of what is written in Scripture cannot. What God has made known to us concerning the Spirit,-His wisdom, love, holiness, and power, remains unaltered throughout the ages; as true to us in these last days as it was in the beginning.

That the Holy Spirit is the producer in the human heart of everything that God calls religion, is beyond question to any one who accepts Bible statements as divinely true. He begins, carries on, and consummates in us all spiritual feeling, all spiritual worship, all spiritual life and energy. Nor can there be anything more hollow and unreal than religion without the Holy Spirit. That which is external and superficial,-which manifests itself in dress, and music, and routine service,-may flourish without Him; nay, can only flourish in His absence. But the deep and the real must be His work from first to last. The love of the Spirit is absolutely necessary to a religion of love, and liberty, and joy. Religiousness is at every man’s command. Any man may get it up in a day; but religion cometh from above, and is the product of the Spirit dwelling and working in the heart.

The bustle of the present day hinders our discernment of this difference; nay, it grieves the Spirit provoking Him utterly to depart; thus leaving us with a hollowness of heart which yields no rest nor satisfaction, and which cannot be acceptable to God. “The Spirit of God,” says Melanchton, “loves retirement and silence; it is then He penetrates into our hearts. The Bride of Christ does not take her stand in the streets and cross ways, but she leads her spouse into the house of her mother” (Song 8:2).

“The gifts of the Holy Ghost”!
This is the Church’s heritage (Acts 2:38,39). How far she has claimed it or used it is a serious question; but that this gift was meant for her in all ages is beyond a doubt. The whole book of the Acts of the Apostles is evidence of this. “My Spirit remaineth among you,” is a promise for the Church as truly as for Israel (Hag 2:5).

From the beginning it has been so; and the holy men raised up by God to speak His words or do His works were men “filled with the Holy Spirit” (Exo 31:2). It is this Spirit that has been the life of the Church. When He came, all was life; when He departed, all was death. Nothing was lacking so long as He was in the midst, and when He left nothing could compensate for His withdrawal. When He was present, the Church was the garden of the Lord; when He forsook her, every herb and flower of that garden withered.

Even in Old Testament days it was so; but since Pentecost, more largely and more powerfully. The indwelling and inworking Spirit, who is the promise of the Father and gift of the Son, is that which belongs to the Church of every age, little as she may have claimed or welcomed her peculiar glory.

“The gift” and “the gifts” are, both of them, expressions used in connection with the Spirit (Acts 8:20-10:45). He is one, yet manifold; called “the seven Spirits of God,” and “the seven lamps of fire,” and the “seven eyes,” and the “seven horns” (Rev 3:1; 4:5; 5:6). He is not only spoken of in connection with each saint, but with the body, the Church universal, which is the “habitation of God, through the Spirit” (Eph 2:22); “the temple of the Holy Ghost” (1 Cor 3:16; 6:19); and, as such, possessor of His love.

Such is the manifold fullness of the Spirit which as the gift of Christ, is the property of the whole Church of God. That fullness is not only the fullness of peace, and wisdom, and holiness, but of love. It is given her, not for herself only, but for the world out of which she has been called. She is to shine in the light of this love upon a dark earth. She is to pour out of the fullness which she receives upon a parched and needy world; out of her are to flow rivers of living water (John 7:38). Great is the world’s need; but not greater than the provided supply: for the fountain of love, out of which the Church receives and pours this living water, is inexhaustible and divine.

The love of the Spirit is, like that of the Son, a love that passeth knowledge, a fountain whose waters fail not: “A pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb” (Rev 22:1).

In the possession of this heavenly gift (of these sevenfold gifts) the Church is unspeakably rich, whatever her outward condition may be. Enjoying the fullness of this abiding Spirit, she manifests her character as the witness for Christ and as the light of the world. These gifts of the ascended Christ (Eph 4:8) made her what she was meant to be in the midst of the world’s evil and of the powers of darkness, “a burning and shining light.” In the power of such gifts she went forth to do battle with the idolatries and immoralities of heathendom. Boldly entering the cities of classic fame, she took possession of pagan temples and Jewish synagogues; and thousands everywhere, through apostolic preaching gathered round the throne.

It was not the gift of miracle, of healing, or of tongues, that did the work. These were not subordinate things, and in many places never used by the apostles. These were not “the best gifts” which we are commanded to covet (1 Cor 12:31).

It was the fullness of spiritual power, possessed and exercised by holy men, awakening, quickening, sanctifying, that wrought the mighty changes which history records.
It is well that we should look back to Pentecost, with wistful eyes, longing for a ministry of Pentecostal power, as the only remedy for the unbelief of the last days. But mere physical miracles are not the desirable things. The gifts of the Spirit, the Church’s inalienable inheritance, are quite apart from bodily manifestations; and they remain with us still. But do we claim them’ Do we use them’ Do we not trust in other strength’ Do we not lean on learning, on science, on talent, as if by these we were to fight and overcome’ And, in so doing, do we not mistake our true position, and character, and mission’ Nay, do we not grieve and quench the Spirit’

Yet, the love of the Spirit is unquenchable.
He is unwilling to depart. He despises not the day of small things; but He bids us look beyond and above them. Formalism, routine, and external religion, the excitements of mysticism,-these are poor substitutes for the life, and glow, and energy of the Holy Spirit. Nothing but His own presence can avail to lift us out of the unreal religiousness into which we have fallen; to transform creeds into realities, and the bodily bowing of the head, or bending of the knee, into spiritual worship; turning the “dim religious light” into the sunshine of a heavenly noon; drawing out of our hymnals the deep heart-music of divine and blessed song; delivering us alike from Rationalism and Ritualism, from a hollow externalism, and from an impulsive and unreasoning fanaticism. It is His presence only that can vitalize ordinances; clothe ministry with power; unite the broken Church; fill the void of aching hearts; impart to service, liberty and gladness; ward off error; and make truth mighty,-filling our sanctuaries with living worshippers, and sending forth men of might to preach the everlasting gospel; and to proclaim, as in primitive days, the Christ that has come, and the Christ that is to come again.

He has come, in His love, to quicken the dead in sin;
and He is daily moving upon the face of the waters,-bringing life out of death. Nor is His arm shortened, that it cannot save.

He has come, in His love, to give light for darkness.
Nor is there any human heart too dark for Him to illumine. He lights up souls. He lights up Churches. He lights up lands, making them that sit in darkness to see a great light.

He has come, in His love, to gather in the wanderers, far and near.
No strayed one has gone too far into the wilderness for Him to follow and to bring back. The “ends of the earth” form the vast region into which His love has gone forth to seek, and find, and save.

He has come, in His love, to guide the doubting heart.
He takes lovingly and gently the hand of the perplexed and inquiring, and leads them into the way of peace. He knows all their troubles and fears, so that they need not fear being misunderstood. He teaches their ignorance and shows them their mistakes, and points their eye to the cross.

He has come, in His love, to bind up the broken-hearted.
His name is the Comforter, and His consolations are as abundant as they are everlasting. “Comfort ye, comfort ye my people,” are the words which he has written down for every sorrowful one (Isa 40:1). In all trial, bereavement, pain, sorrow, let us realize the love of the Spirit. That love comes out most brightly and most tenderly in the day of mourning. In the chamber of sickness or of death, let us find strength and peace in the presence, companionship, and sympathy of the gracious Spirit.

He has come down, in His love, to seek after the backslider.
From a heart that once owned Him, He has been driven out, and He has retired sorrowfully. But He has not ceased to desire a return to His old abode. He still pities, and yearns, and beseeches. “Turn, ye backsliding children, for I am married unto you,” are His words of longing and pity.

He has come, in His love, even to the misbelieving and the deluded, seeking to remove the mists with which a rebellious intellect has compassed itself about; and to lead them out into life, and love, and day.
They are groping for an idea; and He brings them into contact with a Person, even God Himself. They are crying vaguely for knowledge; and He presents to them the wisdom deposited in the Person of the Word made flesh. They are in search of sympathy for their wounded hearts; and He places Himself before them in the fulness of His all-sympathizing love. They are asking for a creed of certainty and perfection, on which their faith may rest; He offers Himself to them as a living and unerring Teacher,-the Author of an infallible Book, all whose pages sparkle with the love of its loving Author. They crave beauty in worship, something to please the eye,-aesthetic beauty, as they call it! He draws the eye to Him who is “the chiefest among ten thousand, and altogether lovely.”

He has come, in His love, to build up His own.
He seeks to fill, with His holy presence, the soul into which He has come. He wants, not a part of the man, but the whole,-body, soul, and spirit,-the entire being, that it may be altogether conformed to Himself. He has come to His temples, and His purpose is to make them in reality, what they are in name, the “habitation of God, the temples of the Holy Ghost.”

Diablo 3’s existence confirmed’

What we heard: For years, rumors have bounced around that Blizzard is secretly developing a third installment in its groundbreaking Diablo role-playing series. Just this past February, a flurry of speculation followed the posting of several job listings for leads to join “the team behind Diablo I and II” for “an unannounced PC project.”

Now, the rumor forge is heating up again, thanks to an interview with Richard A. Knaak, author of three Diablo-based books”Diablo: Legacy of Blood (2001), Diablo: The Kingdom of Shadow (2002), and Diablo: Moon of the Spider (2006). Knaak has also written novels based on Warcraft and the Dungeon & Dragons Dragonlance spin-off. He is currently penning a series of novels featuring the classic fantasy character”and future massively multiplayer online role-playing game hero”Conan the Barbarian.

To promote his forthcoming Diablo book, Diablo: The Sin War: Book One: Birthright, Knaak spoke with Blizzplanet.com and took questions from its readers. However, the biggest bomb came from a site staffer going by the handle “Medievaldragon,” who casually asked if his latest book”the first of a trilogy”would “impact in the storyline of Diablo 3 the game.”

Knaak responded candidly, saying, “The ramifications here will be used for any future project…and I ain’t writing for a dead game. .” (Emoticon in the original.) A Report from Oaxaca by the British Journalist Who the Radio Declared Dead for an Hour After Brad Was Gunned Down

During the course of our lives, transcendental moments come along, and we are forced to sit up and take notice. Everybody has their moments. We all react differently.

It is difficult to figure out how to begin retelling the story of any one of those moments. Presumably, it is up to each person to do their best to convey the transcendence felt, and for each listener to absorb it as their own.

In this instance, all I can do is begin by telling you that, yesterday, for around a hundred minutes, I was dead.

Sometime between five and five-thirty in the afternoon, yesterday, Friday, October 27, in broad daylight, a White Owl circled above our house. My friend Jonathan watched it from the balcony. I never saw it. Hovering completely still, he said, 50 feet above his head, it had been staring straight at him for several minutes. Yet in the split-second it took him to come into the house, tell me to come out and see it, and step back outside, the White Owl had disappeared. Jonathan was aghast. He felt I wasn’t meant to see it.

As we considered the meaning of it all, my cell-phone rang. It was my friend Diablo, the crime reporter. In other words - I later realized - the Devil was calling me up to remind me of my fate. He immediately asked if I was okay. A foreign journalist had been shot in the city center. Said he thought the guy’s name was Andrés. I didn’t know anyone by that name. “Call Victor,” said Diablo, “he’s down at the scene.”

So I called Victor. It was a bad line. In bad English, he told me the guy’s name was Bradley. Bradley Roland Will. Bullet in the chest. Died on his way to hospital. Worked for Indymedia. Only Jonathan standing next to me could describe my expression when I heard the news. Bradley. It was Bradley. Brad! Brad, who I had met the week before when we coincided at a apprehension of a group of drunken youths who had assaulted a young couple. We had both been filming. It was the first time I had met a foreign journalist since I started filming the uprising in Oaxaca. Of course, we spoke, exchanged details, shared a few jokes, agreed to swap footage, and I set him up with a few people who could suggest where he could film. Real nice guy; a real, nice, honest guy doing his best to record events in this fucked-up situation with the hope of a grabbing few crumbs of attention from the world’s news consumers. Brad, you called me the morning of Friday, October 27, your last day on earth, to ask where you could rent a motorbike. Now, you’re gone. You’re the first foreign casualty since the region was plunged into this living hell. The thirteenth casualty in all. And, sadly, probably the most important of all.

Naturally, my first thought was, “it could have been me.” And, for a while, it was me.

I tell Victor to wait for me at the office, then grab a small digital camera, jump on the bike and head straight down to the scene. As the sun went down, the world grew dark.

I decide to detour to the incident, but it was very hard to get through. The barricades were being reinforced. Trucks had unloaded tons of earth to block the streets at strategic points. I spoke to someAPPOpeople (News-speak: “leftist protesters”; State prosecutor: “urban guerrilla terrorists”), the same people who had tried to keep Brad from passing out after he got shot and had bundled him into the back of a VW bug to take him to a private hospital (he died en route), the same people who set up barricades to protect themselves and their neighborhoods from criminals and paramilitary hitmen who in recent weeks have restarted their drive-by shooting campaign.

What you will not be told by most media, especially in Mexico, is that the three hitmen that attacked the barricade, where Brad and other journalists were, have been identified as local policemen. They wielded AR-15 rifles and various pistols and fired indiscriminately into the crowd. Brad was probably not targeted (even though state radio (Radio Ciudadania: 99.1FM- pirate government radio broadcasting from unknown location) is saying Brad “was an armed terrorist, and there is more to this than meets the eye” and “Indymedia is a branch of theAPPO”), but he was the unlucky one, hit full in the chest, right in the solar plexus, by a 9mm wide pellet of steel traveling at around 1000 meters per second.

What you probably won’t hear either is that theAPPOpeople do not carry any firearms. Their only weapons are rocks, clubs, molotov cocktails, and the occasional home-made fireworks mortar. To my knowledge, in five months of protests, they haven’t fired a single shot from a firearm. All the casualties have been on the side of the ‘protesters,’ eitherAPPOor teachers. It may well be true that theAPPOdoes have an array of firearms, but have taken a brave political decision not to use them.

Dropping a few names, theAPPOlets me through the barricades and I arrive at the neighborhood of El Bajio where Victor was waiting for me. I know a lot of people in the area. A group of local journalists have a dingy office here, in a concrete block that stinks of urine. A police blotter, Noti Roja, run by crime news godfather El Chiricuto, is based upstairs. And, next door, Diablo has a bare spare room with a mattress where I sometimes stay the night. I often come here to hang out, get information, check out any new footage and photos, and have a beer. Chiricuto, Victor, Bermudez, Teo, Zurco, Diablo, Chavez: I have known them all for about three years. And, I’m a tall white guy with a rat-tail, so the whole neighborhood knows me, even if I’ve never spoken to some of them.

When I turn up, at around 7:OOpm, there are about 20 people gathered in the street. Some are crying. As I pull up on the motorbike, I call out to Chiricuto. Seeing me, his face drops. He looks angry. “Yon! Is that you, Yon’!” The others turn to look at me, aghast. I realize they are all drunk. But they look like they have all seen a ghost. In fact, they are staring straight at one. “What do you mean’” I ask. “Fuckin’ Yon, get off the bike!”

I still don’t get it. As I turn off the engine and dismount, Chiricuto approaches slowly. He pinches my arm. “Yon!” he exclaims, wrapping his arms around me.

Teo cries out, totally wasted: “I fuckin’ told you! I told you so! Yon, only I really believed!”

Chiricuto: “Yon, you were dead! We all thought you were dead!” Everybody on the street gathers around, frantically hugging me. Chiricuto is overwhelmed. “My son! My son! He is still alive!” He pulls out the camera and starts clicking away. Everybody wants a picture with the dead guy. People start flooding out of their houses.

Teo: “They said your name on the radio! They said you had been shot and killed! Zurco said he saw your body in the back of a VW bug! You were foaming at the mouth! He has been crying ever since. You need to go and see them! (Referring to the people at the barricade, three blocks away where I had been filming). They all think you are dead.”

Chiricuto comes back with a 5-litre plastic tub of mezcal. “This is for you, you have to pour everyone a drink. It is mezcal for the Dead.” As I start to pour out little shots for everybody, he tells me he had been crying. “There could be ten dead… but not Yon. If Yon goes down, I swear the governor is next.” The wiry little Chiricuto, talking like a revolutionary tiger. I spill a drop of mezcal on the floor before downing the shot, in recognition of my fate. Between crying out to people to come out onto the street, spreading the news and taking photos of us all, Chiricuto goes on: “We were about to go and pick you up from the morgue and were going to hold a wake for you… all of us here… in the centre of the graveyard over there.” We were standing a block from the gates of the city cemetery; the street here is called Caminito al Cielo: “Little path to the sky.”

I had arrived at my own wake. Tears welled up and rolled down my cheek. For them, my one hundred-minute flatline was over.

I celebrated my own resurrection with them for about half an hour. I explained to them that the guy who had been killed was a friend of mine and that I had to take care of a few things. I had a lot on my mind: I had to contact Zurco; I had to find Brad’s body - because I figured I might be the one to identify him - which also meant going to the city morgue - no easy task; I had to contact the embassy - both the US embassy for Brad, and the UK embassy for me. What if my name had gone out over the radio, and the embassy got wind of it and tried to notify my parents’ I don’t even want to think about that possibility… But, I had no phone numbers. What I did have with me was that minor miracle called a cell-phone. I fished it out and flicked through the contacts list.

First, I decided to call Pati, a wonderful young girl who stoically manned the roadblock that Zurco was in charge of. Her friend Olga picked up, who I also knew. As soon as I said “it’s me, John”, she flipped out. All she could say was “Yon’ is that you, Yon’ Yon, is that really you’!” She must have said it twenty times, until all I could do was shout: “Olga, it’s me! It’s me! Calm down! I’m on my way over there!”

I jumped on the bike and headed to the roadblock, which was 300 yards away. As I approached, I noticed the scene felt much more sinister than on previous nights. This time they had assembled around a dozen public buses to block off the ten streets that make up this major intersection. Fires raged all around: burning tires, sofas, telegraph poles. All electric lights were off. I turned off the lights on the bike as I drew closer, a standard practice. They flashed a huge floodlight in my face, shouting,“No hay paso! Date la vuelta!”(”There is no way through, turn around!”).

“It’s me, John!” I shouted back.

“Yon’! Is that you, Yon’!” Olga and Pati screamed like little girls and rushed over to me, hugging and kissing me. “Thank God you are ok! My mum hasn’t stopped crying! We heard on the radio that you had been shot and killed! Zurco said he saw your body in a car!” The rest of the barricade crew ran over. There must have been a hundred people circled around me. They hugged me and shook my hand and patted me on the back. One old lady wouldn’t let go of my arm. The big man Zurco came over and crushed me with a big hug. His wife was in tears. I was overwhelmed. All I could say was, “Gracias, gracias, I’m fine, I’m fine. I’ve been at home. It was a friend who was killed, not me. I knew him a bit.” They asked me about Brad and I told them what I knew. They thought about his family and hoped that theUSAwould now apply pressure on the Mexican government to resolve the situation here. “Now, the governor really has to go,” said some. And, today, Saturday, federal forces are again gathering at the airport military base, arriving in six massive troop transport planes.

Wrenching myself away, apologizing and saying I had to take care of some things for Brad, I walked to the end of the block and pulled my phone out again. First, I called Daniela at the Anglo-Mexican foundation in Mexico City, who I knew had close ties to the British embassy. “Just tell them that if they hear that I’m dead, it’s not true.” She also gave me a US embassy emergency number, which I dialed after hanging up.

Some embassy operator guy answered. “My name is John Dickie, I am a British journalist in Oaxaca and I’m calling because an American journalist was just shot and killed here.” The guy’s tone of voice immediately pissed me off.

“Who do you work for’”

“What does it matter who I work for’ITN, for fuck’s sake.”

“So, who do you want to talk to’”

“You tell me, man! Whoever the fuck you think I should talk to about a dead American journalist!”

Robert Zimmerman, the deputy head of the press office, came on the line. He was more helpful. I told him the story and gave him Brad’s full name. They had not received word yet.

“There is no authority in Oaxaca right now,” I said, “so you probably won’t hear anything. I am sending you the word.” He was skeptical because I hadn’t seen the body. Fair point. But I had spoken to witnesses and had seen the photos already.

“I’m on the way to the morgue. Call me in half an hour.”

Then I called the US consul in Oaxaca - an aloof prick - and left a message. Then I called another friend who knew Brad, to accompany me to the morgue. Victor and Bermudez, two local journalist friends, also came. We left the roadblock in a convoy of motorcycles. This wasn’t too clever considering paramilitary hitmen ride around on motorbikes, so theAPPOis very wary of groups of bikers. Plus, we were going to have to negotiate our way through the city center. Victor led us along a safe route. We did not see a single car.

Arriving at the morgue, where I know some of the staff, we went over to greet the head forensic doctor - they call him Dr. Muerte. He let us in to see Brad; I won’t describe the operating theater. Once inside, standing next to the cold stone slab, which I had so often filmed for a documentary the year before, I was now faced with a body I had known in life; every crime journalist’s worst nightmare. I nodded gently. It was, indeed, Bradley Roland Will. His brown eyes were wide open, staring straight through me, into infinity. His chest was sown up, but the bullet hole was obvious. I didn’t linger. Dr. Death put his arm around my shoulder and escorted me outside, where he showed me the two 9mm bullet tips he had removed from Brad’s chest. I wondered why he had them in the pocket of his white coat.

Outside, Brad’s roomates, an Indymedia colleague, a Spanish photographer, and a Human Rights worker, were gathered. We all spoke for a while. They had been with Brad at the time. A pick-up truck had burst through a barricade and several men had opened fire on the “protesters.” Brad had been at the front of the pack, hit from around 30 metres away. They had also been fired on from rooftops. The gunmen have since been identified from press photographs and video stills as local police, and have supposedly been handed over to the ‘authorities.’ The shooters hadn’t covered their faces; in Oaxaca, when you are the law, impunity is a sport.

The morgue people told us they could not do an official identification without Brad’s passport and the consul present. We decided his roommate would take care of it in the morning.

At around midnight, we rode again through the night streets, back to the barricade. I stayed up for another couple of hours at the roadblock before heading down the street to Diablo’s spare room. Before going to bed, Chiricuto and I watched the news.Televisashowed uncut footage of the shootings and of Brad’s death. It was gruesome to watch. But the most gruesome part was listening to the presenter saying the shots were fired by “neighbors” who are tired of the conflict and who have turned against theAPPO. In Mexico, the extent of political influence is unbounded.

Sixteen hours after the White Owl appeared, I stood on the balcony with Jonathan, and we recalled a local saying:

“Cuando la lechuza vuela, El indio muere.”

“When the White Owl flies, the Indian dies.”

The White Owl had appeared at exactly the time of Brad’s death. No doubt we would never see it again. Because there was no White Owl, and now there is one less Indian in the world of the living.

As for Brad and me, our destinies divided. I stayed here. He was called back.

At least it looks like Bradley Roland Will’s death may help bring an end to this conflict, because, after five months of complete apathy, the federal government looks like it has been moved to act, finally sending in the federal police to restore public security. Did George W. have a quiet word with Fox’ Probably. And for helping set off this chain of events, Brad and his family can be proud. However, whether a sudden federal incursion will solve the problem remains to be seen. Tomorrow we might know. TheAPPOwon’t move until the governor is removed from office. But the everyday folk of Oaxaca deserve to at least be allowed to live in a secure environment, regardless of their allegiance. What is certain is that the rotten apple that is local government culture in southern Mexico needs to be ripped clean from its throat. It will doubtlessly take several generations.

Finally, the question has to be asked: does a gringo always have to die for the world to act’

INDICE DE PERSONAJES HUMORÍSTICOS

 

NOTA: Revisando libretas y cuadernos me encontré con este índice de personajes humorísticos que iban a formar parte del circo de Slictik. Algunos ya les resultan suficientemente conocidos, otros ni siquiera se han asomado a Internet, permanecen en la reserva y algunos, los menos, son tan solo un nombre y un esbozo. Todos ellos están a su disposición si los necesitan para darles la réplica en el Hotel o si se atreven a manejarlos, les cedo las riendas. También pueden llamarles para que les hagan compañía en los momentos de tedio y pesado aburrimiento. Sus contratos están en poder del millonario Slictik, quien los cederá gratuitamente, tan solo deberán pagarles el correspondiente billete de avión, alimentarles y ofrecerles un jergón de paja para dormir.

Crear un personaje es tan sencillo como respirar, lo complicado es darles de comer (especialmente si se trata de Brunelli) y aguantarles cuando se ponen pesaditos. Por eso no me costó mucho esfuerzo hacerme con esta pequeña ciudad personajes humorísticos. Y ahora conózcanlos uno a uno.

Quiero reconocer aquí una deuda con Ibañez, el dibujante español de tebeos, que tanto me deleitara en mi infancia con sus conocidos personajes, tales como Mortadelo y Filemón y tantos otros. Los personajes humorísticos de Slictik nacieron con raíces “ibañescas”. No solo fueron bautizados en su pila bautismal, sino que algunos tienen rasgos copiados de los suyos. Por solo poner algunos ejemplos les diré que Brunelli tiene algo de Carpanta y del Gordito relleno y Alvarito está inspirado en su personaje el botones Sacarino.

 

 

 

 

EL MILLONARIO SLICTIK

Alcanzó la riqueza gracias a su olfato para detectar humoristas. Su circo de Slictik recorrió medio mundo recaudando divisas de ingenuos. Ahora se dedica al ocio y a la buena vida. Sus ocupaciones principales son troncharse de risa y degustar los platos de Iñaki Lizorno. Su esposa, karen Latic, está hasta el gorro de sus excentricidades y cualquier día le da la patada en el trasero.

EL PROFESOR CABEZA-PRIVILEGIADA

Ya conocen algunos de los inventos de esta mente privilegiada. Son todos originales y muy llamativos. A veces resultan mal, como sus experimentos con la bomba antimateria, y pueden llenar un hotel de agujeros dimensionales; algo así como un queso de gruyere dimensional. Su salto a la fama se inició al conocer a un profesor de la universidad Mentis Galacticiensis, el Sr. Hipopótamus Hipocondriacus, más conocido como Hipo, inventor de la zooantropología de la que se aprovechó el profesor, adjudicándosela y convirtiendo a Hipo en su ayudante.

HIPO. HIPOP”TAMUS HIPOCONDRIACUS

Un catedrático de universidad, gordo y bonachón, a quien sus alumnos retrataron en las paredes del campus y en venganza inventó la zooantropología para vengarse de toda la especie humana. Sus andanzas con el profesor Cabezaprivilegiada aún no son conocidas, pero lo serán. Ahora está refugiado en el laboratorio secreto del profesor.

EL SR. PESTOLAZZI, DIRECTOR DEL HOTEL

Ya conocen a este apestoso personaje por lo que no les presentaré. Tan solo descubrirles un secreto: nació como parodia del autor que se ha visto obligado a probar perfume tras perfume para contentar a su esposa, un olfato privilegiado, sin llegar a conseguirlo nunca.

OLEGARIO BRUNELLI, EL HUMORISTA NUMBER ONE

Gordo, calvo, tragón, buena gente y divertido a ratos. Es una parodia sangrante del autor, que no deja de parodiarse y reírse de sí mismo, porque cree que de esta forma alcanzará algún día el cielo que nos ha sido prometido. Lo conocen sobradamente porque es uno de los personajes favoritos del autor y se mueve hacia atrás en el Hotel en estos momentos, debido a que fue tragado por uno de los agujeros dimensionales del profesor.

EL SR. ALMIRANTE, PRESIDENTE DE LA ASOCIACION MUNDIAL DE HUMORISTAS

Enemigo declarado de Brunelli. Llegó a donde está gracias a la mafia y a que se convirtió en un lameculos profesional. Es una desdicha para la profesión de humorista y Brunelli le tiene unas ganas…

ALVARITO PINA, BOTONES DEL HOTEL

Joven y vital, nada se le resiste. Se embarca en cualquier aventura y se acerca a cualquier dama solitaria que se ponga a su alcance.

I’AKI LIZORNO, COCINERO POSTMODERNO

En un principio nació como una parodia de algunos cocineros vascos, muy conocidos, y algunos de ellos con programas radiofónicos o televisivos. Pero con el tiempo creo que les ha superado a todos ellos y creado una cocina original y exquisita.

ALOYSIUX ALPEDRETE, MAITRE DEL HOTEL

Nació por necesidades del servicio y sin muchas pretensiones, pero se ha hecho un hueco importante en el circo de Slictik.

EL DOCTOR PHILIDOR, DOCTOR EN MEDICINA Y AJEDRECISTA DE GRANDES VUELOS.

El hotel necesitaba un doctor y Philidor fue creado de la nada. Su nombre tiene mucho que ver con la conocida defensa Philidor en el ajedrez. Tuvo su importancia en los primeros pasos del Hotel, pero luego desapareció de la vida pública. Tal vez tenga la culpa una interesante partida o una dama asequible.

EL DETECTIVE ASTA DE TORO

Un hotel sin detective es como un jardín sin jardinero. Nació como parodia de los detectives de novela negra pero resultó demasiado bestia para ser un buen imitador. Ahora tiene su propio estilo.

 

 

EL DOCTOR CARLO SUN, DISCÍPULO DE JUNG

Con el tiempo ha llegado a ser uno de los preferidos del autor, junto con Brunelli. Nació como parodia de algunos psiquiatras a quien su autor tuvo la desgracia de conocer. No obstante se ha ganado un merecido prestigio y su obsesión por el subconsciente colectivo de Jung aún no ha dado los mejores momentos. Esperen y verán.

SR. OLMOS, JEFE DE CAMAREROS

Ha perdido mucho fuelle. Nació con garra y con aspiraciones a ser una estrella. Se quedó por el camino, pero aún tiene muchas opciones.

CLARITA ALEGRÍA, CAMARERA

Apenas fue una idea para un personaje de Ximena, quien la ha convertido en una estrella de esplendorosa magnitud. Se puede decir que de Slictk solo tiene el nombre y poco más. Ximena creó un personaje emblemático, como es Matilde Matildé, por quien Slictik siente una gran debilidad y que promete llegar a cotas aún mucho más altas.

EL PADRE CA’IBANO, UN CURA DE ANTES DEL VATICANO

Primero fue contratado por Slictik para su circo y luego reciclado para el Hotel, donde se necesitaba un confesor sólido y fibroso, porque allí se comenten muchos pecados…demasiados.

 

ANTONIUS PILA ROTUNDA, ENTRENADOR DE FUTBOL

El deporte no podía faltar y la elección de un entrenador y no de un futbolista se debió a que ofrecía mayores posibilidades humorísticas. Aún no ha despegado, pero promete tardes memorables.

LADINO, EL TERRORISTA PSICOL”GICO

Reciclado de una novela del autor que aún no conocen y que tal vez no acabe nunca. Se pasó al humor, se cambió el nombre y recordó al inspector Clusót, a Jane, la pantera rosa y otros muchos personajes que aparecen en la serie que algún día tendrá su adecuado remate.

KAWABATA, EL BUROCRATA

Necesitaba a un burocrata en las altas esferas para desentrañar todos los entresijos de estas esferas, demasiado altas para el común de los mortales. Decidí que fuera japonés para buscar el contraste entre la maravillosa y ritual educación japonesa y los terribles “embolaos” burocráticos en que iba a caer. Poco conocido, merece mucho más de lo que tiene.

Nació como una parodia de Castaneda, pero con el tiempo llega a conocer a Don Juan y a transformarse en un discípulo mucho mejor de Carlitos. Solo magia blanca. Si quieren hacer daño al prójimo busquen a otro y cuidado no les pille don Crisanto con las manos en la masa.

DON SARAMPI”N, MAGNATE DE LA COMUNICACI”N

No le conocen y puede que tarden en conocerlo. Pero si alguna vez aparece por el Hotel nunca lo olvidarán. Una especie de Berlusconi pero aún con muchos más tentáculos.

ALFREDO EL MONTA’ERO

El deporte y la ecología necesitaban un representante en el circo de Slictik y Alfredo es la parodia del montañero que fue Slictik en su juventud. Sus aventuras están narradas por su hijo, que se cachondea del padre sin ningún pudor.

EL SR. MADORNO, DUE’O DE UNA PÁGINA PORNO

Apenas esbozado. Nació deseando criticar la pornografía en Internet pero luego se unió a la mafia del sexo y terminó como el gran gurú del sexo en Internet.

AMABILIO, POLÍTICO GENTIL

Nació como una necesidad ineludible de representar la política en el circo de Slictik. Aún no ha visto la luz porque algunos mal pensados lo podrían confundir con un conocido político español. De verdad, de verdad que es bastante anterior. Lo que una vez más nos confirma que la realidad supera ampliamente a la ficción.

DON ALCANFOR, MODISTO Y DECORADOR

Ya lo conocen del Hotel, aunque les queda mucho por ver de sus diseños surrealistas.

ADALBERTO, EL JEFE MÁS EXPERTO

Apenas esbozado. No asoma la cabecita porque al autor le resulta doloroso recordar ciertas cosillas de nada.

SAN PITO PATO, UN SANTO DEL SIGLO XXII

Su biografía anda por ahí, en alguna libreta. No le he dado vía libre por miedo a herir susceptibilidades religiosas demasiado ortodoxas. Pero es divertido y tal vez se alíe con Milarepa. Quien por cierto tomó prestados algunos milagros, tales como la levitación.

LUCIFERINO, IMITADOR DIVINO

Tiene una personalidad muy definida y su biografía, contada por uno de sus muñecos, hace tiempo que está escrita. No ha salido a la luz por culpa de que no surgió la ocasión, pero en cualquier momento nos monta un show con sus muñecos.

MARIBEL LA TOP MODÉL

Hizo una aparición rauda por el Hotel y desapareció. Tal vez porque hubiera enamorado a todos los machos y éstos habrían sufrido demasiado con ella. No solo por sus curvas, sino porque es una intelectual de primera. La única top modél capaz de citar a Shakespeare y a Cervantes de carrerilla. Aparte de que daría sopas con honda a cualquier intelectual de prestigio. ¡Para que luego digan de las top modéls!

LOTARIO, EL REPORTERO MÁS DICHARACHERO DEL DIARIO

Ya le conocen del mundial de fútbol. Pero aún no lo conocen bien. Les dará clases de reporterismo y locutor de radio y tv si se apuntan.

LIN YI, PROFESOR DE TAICHÍ

Una creación espontánea para una necesidad concreta, que se ha convertido en algo muy especial para el autor. Si algún día le dan la oportunidad les hará bailar sobre el techo.

EL PROFETA MILAREPA

Ya le conocen sobradamente. Les aseguro que apenas ha iniciado su vuelo “y no me refiero a la levitación- porque aún le queda mucho camino que recorrer hasta llegar al Nirvana o la budeidad.

SLIM EL VENGATIVO Y SAM, T”CALA OTRA VEZ, SAM

No conocen su biografía, ni sus antecedentes en el circo de Slictik, porque el autor temió ser lapidado debido a lo que cuenta, sin tapujos. Además que es negro y eso hiere ciertas sensibilidades xenófobas y racistas a más no poder. Su alianza con Sam fue coyuntural pero se han hecho excelentes amigos.

Ladrón y chorizo viene a ser lo mismo. Chorizo se le llama en jerga al ladrón de poca monta. Al menos aquí en España. No le conocen, pero cualquier día aparece por el Hotel y se quedan sin móviles o sin televisores en los cuartos.

EL PROFESOR VICENTE ESTRAGOS, EL ÚNICO METERE”LOGO QUE SIEMPRE ACIERTA

Apenas esbozado. Es como un tornado que anuncia el cambio climático y nadie le hace caso.

Otro personaje de Johnny el gigoló. Quiere ser malo pero solo consigue ser divertido.

No puede hablar, se maneja con señas y gracias a su secretario, un encanto y dechado de perfecciones. Sus dotes deductivas no tienen parangón. Sacarles la información a los sospechosos a través de señas resulta cuanto menos interesante.

¡Vaya un par de dos! Que diría el otro. Sin ellos proponérselo nos demuestran que el Quijote sigue siendo la historia más actual de toda la historia.

Hay muchos locos, pero este además de loco es telépata… de verdad. Permanece en la sombra, acechando y devorando mentes.

Don Fóbico sufre todas las fobias posibles, por eso resulta una pesadilla para las personas de su entorno.

 

Y con esto creo que tienen bastante. Si aparece algún personaje más, descarriado, lo llevaremos al rebaño. Si necesitan crear nuevos personajes pueden hacerlo sin el menor problema. Crear un personaje es lo más fácil del mundo, lo difícil es alimentarlos, educarlos, llevarlos a la cama a su hora y aguantarlos cuando se ponen plomizos.

Recuerden que un personaje es como un niño. Si lo tratan bien recibirán satisfacciones y si lo tratan mal se les rebelará y andarán toda la vida a la greña. Como le sucede a Slictik.

Para evitar que el lector curioso se ponga a contarlos lo he hecho yo. Son setenta y tres personajes exactamente.

Café Taumba
Tocaron en el circuito rockero de Mexico DF mientras escuchaban a bandas anglosajonas como The Cure, The Smiths, Stone Roses, The Clash o Violent Femmes, grupos con los que crecieron los cuatro mientras seguían trazando su carrera sin detenerse a imaginar un punto de destino. En el año 2004 y Café Tacuba tiene un nuevo disco, aparecido el pasado año y el séptimo hasta la fecha, aunque quizás quepa reordenarlos.
Su primer trabajo, “Café Tacuba”, aparece en 1992. Producido por el argentino Gustavo Santaolalla constituye su tarjeta de presentación y en él se aprecian algunos rasgos de la personalidad del grupo, especialmente su seriedad en los planteamientos musicales, lo cual no está reñido con el incisivo humor negro que poseen algunas de sus canciones. Su segundo álbum, “Re”, aparece en 1994, y con él sobrevienen las mejores críticas. Saludado por la crítica especializada como uno de los más importantes en la historia del rock mexicano, en él el cuarteto exhibe su gusto por reinventarse, así como una imperiosa necesidad por aventurarse en la búsqueda de nuevas sonoridades.
Su siguiente disco “Avalancha de éxitos” (1996) es un disco enteramente de versiones que, rápidamente, se convierte en el más popular del grupo. Sus ocho cortes dieron lugar a cinco singles muy celebrados, entre ellos “No controles” de Nacho Cano y “Alármala de tos” de Botellita de Jerez. En el disco participa haciendo coros David Byrne.
Los medios anglosajones sorprendidos por el auge de lo latino se hacen eco de la banda y el semanario Newsweek los incluye en su portada como referente del movimiento latino en los USA. Su disco “Re” es considerado como uno de los siete discos esenciales del género. Su siguiente disco “Revés/YoSoy” publicado en 1999, es un disco doble que incluye un disco instrumental (Revés) y otro de piezas cantadas (YoSoy) más en la línea de trabajo del grupo. Posteriormente sacaron un Ep compuesto por 4 canciones originales del grupo chileno Los Tres interpretadas a su manera titulado “Vale Callampa”. También han participado en varios soundtracks, como es el caso de la película “Y tu mamá también”, “Vivir Mata” o “Amores Perros“; grabado canciones para diferentes discos tributo, entre ellos el de “José José” y “Los Tigres del Norte”; y colaborado con artistas como Celso Piña, El Gran Silencio, Inspector, Kronos Quartet, Ofelia Medina, Julieta Venegas, David Byrne o Los Lobos.

Tras su anterior disco de estudio, en el que Café Tacuba forzaron el experimentalismo hasta sus últimas consecuencias, el pasado año aparecía en el mercado “Cuatro Caminos” un disco mucho más homogéneo, en el que por vez primera incorporaban a la grabación una batería con lo que supone, ya de primeras, un tremendo cambio sonoro. Pero más allá de este hecho puntual lo que Café Tacuba nos oferta es una renovación conceptual respecto a su discografía anterior. Dejan de lado lo que era hasta el momento su marca de fábrica, es decir la fusión de ritmos con instrumentos tradicionales, y nos proponen una deriva hacia el rock más inteligente.
Para alcanzar su objetivo decidieron trabajar con tres productores diferentes y en diferentes estudios, comenzando por El Ensayo, lugar de trabajo de Café Tacvba en Ciudad. Satélite donde Andrew Weiss (productor de Babasónicos y Ween) trabajó con ellos día y noche de una forma más directa y menos jerarquizada, de una forma natural como de primera sensación; después, los estudios Capitol en la ciudad de Los Angeles, donde le tocó a Gustavo Santaolalla y Anibal Kerpel continuar; y por último, un estudio cerca de la ciudad de Buffalo, donde estuvieron por más de 15 días en la nieve trabajando junto a Dave Friedman (productor de Mercury Rev, The Delgados y The Flaming Lips) intensa y profundamente, ya que con él la forma de trabajo consistía en extraer toda la creatividad sin importar el resultado sonoro.
El resultado final no puede ser más excitante, Cafe Tacuba se han reinventado nuevamente a si mismos para brindarnos un disco exótico, delirante, melancólico, exhuberante, interesante y ecléctico como sólo ellos saben hacer, pero un eclecticismo que no trasluce desorientación, sino muy al contrario una decidida, compleja y marcada personalidad.

El secreto, una honestidad artística probada y una latente inquietud por crecer personal y artísticamente: “Siento que nosotros siempre lo que hemos hecho ha sido así, lo que nos nace y lo que resulta es lo que van a ver, igual en un escenario. Funciona como una ecuación matemática que no es indescifrable. No sé cómo funciona, pero sé que funciona, artística y laboralmente. Cada uno de nosotros tiene una visión o una expresión artística muy especial que sumada entre los cuatro resulta lo que es el grupo. No siempre se logra, pero aquí lo bueno es que funcionó, y lo más inteligente para mí de esto ha sido saberlo administrar para poder seguir haciéndolo”. Cafe Tacuba han demostrado ser una banda polifacética capaz de ofrecer lo mejor de cada uno en esas facetas sin alterar ese producto final que constituye en si mismo Café Tacuba.

Boedekka
Ya te pusimos un tema hace mas de un año, concretamente en la segunda edicion del nido del cuco.
Son londinenses, la base de Boedekka son Carl, Finn y James.
Musicalmente se mueven en círculos que podríamos crear alrededor de Primal Scream, Pink Floyd, Beta Band, Paul McCartney y demás figuras de la música del siglo XX. Las letras son tensas proclamas hacia la cordura humana y todos sus derivados.

Todo empezó cuando Boy George (capo del sello en el que publicó el grupo sus
trabajos en UK en formato single) recibe una maqueta, los ve en directo y
los termina fichando y definiendo como una especie de Pink Floyd pero con cuatro Syd Barrett. Publican de un mini cd y un cdep en Inglaterra en Reino Unido. La prensa dice de ellos cosas como que eran el grupo nº1 en la oficina de MOJO, el perfecto cruce entre Pink Floyd y Beta Band según Q.

Mushroom Pillow edita en España una recopilación de todas sus canciones
publicadas fuera introduciendo así una nueva forma de ver las cosas. En
2004 publican The Piper, The Devil, The Poet And The Priest.

Campus Party acoge el primer congreso de vuelo virtual
Campus Party, uno de los mayores evento de entretenimiento electrónico en red del mundo que se celebra del 24 al 30 de julio en Valencia, acogerá el Primer Congreso de Simulación Virtual. En su décimo aniversario, el evento cuenta con 10 áreas temáticas entre las que destaca una dedicada especialmente al vuelo.

Coincidiendo con la celebración de su 10º Aniversario, Campus Party acogerá este año el I Congreso de Vuelo Virtual, un foro de debate para todos los aficionados a esta actividad, que pondrá en común los conocimientos de los diferentes sectores implicados.
Entre otros temas se abordarán: “Vuelo virtual, mucho más que un videojuego”, “La situación del vuelo virtual en España” o las posibilidades que ofrece la simulación, tanto en su vertiente más lúdica, como en la que permite convertir a un entusiasta aficionado en un profesional de la aviación.

Además, los asistentes a Campus Party que decidan visitar el área Simulación, podrán conocer todos los secretos de la fabricación de una cabina de avión y también podrán asistir a los talleres de aviación civil que acercará a los asistentes a simuladores como Flight Simulator, Condor o X-Planet; aviación militar em dónde pilotos reales y virtuales se batirán en duelo en los cielos de Campus Party. Google se hizo verbo
La última actualización de uno de los diccionarios de inglés más vendidos en Estados Unidos, el Merrian-Webster Collegiate Dictionary, incluye varias incorporaciones. Entre ellas está ‘Google’, pero no como nombre sino, por primera vez, como verbo.

El nuevo verbo, como no podía ser de otra forma, significa buscar algún tipo de información en la Red a través del popular buscador. Algo que podría generar envidia entre la competencia, aunque aún no ha sido así.

Otras palabras aceptadas en la nueva edición del diccionario no son menos curiosas. Por ejemplo, ‘mouse potato’, expresión para definir a una persona que pasa mucho tiempo usando el ordenador, o ‘himbo’ (combinación de ‘him’ y ‘bimbo’), que se utiliza para gente hombres atractivos pero poco interesantes.

Un diccionario con solera
El Merriam-Webster es un diccionario con siglos de historia que se encarga de recoger términos que se han “asimilado en el inglés escrito”, comenta Arthur Bicknell, publicista de la compañía.
En 1806, el Noah Webster’s A Compendious Dictionary of the English Language ya recogía palabras que empezaban a sonar y que hoy son comunes, como ’surf’.

Este diccionario no es el único que ya incluye nuevas palabras de la jerga propia de la Red. Recientemente, el Diccionario de Oxford admitió ‘phishing’ y ‘podcasting’, y el de la RAE recoge, desde 2001, palabras como ‘web’ o ‘hardware‘.

Dan Geller es el encargado de toda la armada instrumental, una armada que tiene como fuente principal el laptop, el cual domina con gran maestría. Dan no dedica todo el tiempo exclusivamente al dúo sino que también tiene voz y voto en las decisiones del sello. Dan une sus esfuerzos con Amy Dykes, su compañera, la cual canta en la mayoría de canciones, una voz poco contagiosa y que recuerda a la inconfundible Deborah Harry. El nombre de la banda lo escogieron por que vivian en Brooklyn, un nombre individual capaz de unirles.

“Out of the loop” fue el primer álbum publicado en el verano de 2001, antes del fatídico 11/9. Hay que reconocer que durante esos días el nombre de la banda causo un verdadero impacto y más teniendo en cuenta que el tema 11 del álbum se llamaba “September”, una de las pistas que más transmite la sensación de urbano. Malos momentos que ellos superaron planteándose cambiar de nombre, acto que al final no hicieron.

El primer álbum, aunque no sorprende, atrae con grandes canciones de pop bailable, divertido y que da muchas pistas de las influencias de la banda, desde pre-britpop (The Heart Throbs, Saint Etienne, Stone Roses) a texturas que recuerdan a New order, sumándole breakbeats, electrónica positiva de detalle, cortes instrumentales perfectos para anuncios publicitarios o neo-psicodélia. Hay temas agradables de escuchar como “Holland tunnel” o “You don’t even know her” que tienen momentos no esperados que instántaneamente aumentan el grado de aceptación.Un disco con varios temas bailables, con minutaje de single, de 2 a 3 minutos básicamente, como “Look around you” o “Move on”, uno de los temas más cálido, claramente destinado al directo.

El segundo álbum “The tight connection” publicado en 2002 sigue en la línea del primero mostrando muchas claves ya reconocibles en su debut: notas de teclado desnudas procedentes del house, sitares, la voz inalterable, difícil de convencer a primera escucha de Amy o parámetros más cercanos al electropop, escucha “Can’t take the heat” o la versión escogida de Amy del clásico de Blondie con Moroder, “Call me” que la sitúa en la sección de electroclash. La segunda versión es del clásico stonerosiano “Shoot you down”, esta escogida por Dan. “Believe in me” es otra joya para ser pinchada cada fin de semana con los hits del dance pop suecos. Si en el primer disco estaba “Move on” como el tema más groove, “Dancing alone” tiene el mismo protagonismo añadiéndole loops de funk y electropop de vieja escuela.

Infadels
Mucho camino que recorrer para afianzar su personalidad es lo que tienen por delante los autores, eso sí, de singles tan eficaces para la pista como “Love Like Semtex”, “Can´t Get Enough” o “Topboy” y de temas que intentan escapar a los lugares comunes del rock electrónico vía funk (la base primordial de la que de momento no pueden renegar sus integrantes). Y digo “intentan” porque “Murder That Sound” -canción que podría resumir de la mejor manera el sonido al que se apuntan Infadels- queda aislada en el centro del disco como un faro rodeado por un lado de los potenciales hits ya mencionados y por otro de temas que inciden en la cuesta abajo de un “We Are Not The Infadels” que no es ni mucho menos un mal trabajo y que debe gozar, al menos, de las oportunidades que a otros con iguales o menos argumentos se les brindan. De momento es quizá su oportunismo el que puede servirles de catapulta o condenarles al baul de los recuerdos a no muy largo plazo.

PET SHOP BOYS: Espectáculo audiovisual al aire libre

Pet Shop Boys actuarán el 29 de julio en La Granja de San Ildefonso (Segovia) presentando su espectáculo ‘The Battleship of Potemkin’ de forma gratuita. El dúo aparecerá acompañado por la Orquesta Sinfónica de Dresde (compuesta por 26 instrumentos) para interpretar la banda sonora que ha compuesto para la película ‘El Acorazado Potemkin’ que dirigió Sergei Eisenstein en 1925. La música acompañará a las secuencias del largometraje, que se proyectará simultáneamente sobre una pantalla gigante. Neil Tennant y Cris Lowe (Pet Shop Boys) ya estrenaron el espectáculo el 12 de septiembre de 2005 en la plaza de Trafalgar en Londres y posteriormente lo llevaron a la Plaza Roja de Moscú. En esta ocasión se enmarcará dentro de las Noches Mágicas del Festival de las Artes de Castilla y León que organiza la Consejería de Cultura de la Comunidad junto con el Ayuntamiento de La Granja y Patrimonio Nacional. Pet Shop Boys presentarán también ‘Fundamental’, su último trabajo hasta la fecha, en el Festival Ecléctic de Valencia (23 de julio) y en el Creamfields de Almería (12 de agosto)

DIRE STRAITS
Pocos grupos pueden reivindicar su sintonía con un estilo de vida, pero los Dire Straits son una excepción, les guste o no. Brothers In Arms, lanzado en 1985, les estableció como la primera auténtica perla de la era CD para la generación de veinte y pocos que nació del boom de los años 80. Su blues tradicional y accesible les hizo perfectos para un público relativamente acomodado, maduro y masivo a quién gusta una música bien interpretada y fácilmente digerible. Durante nueve semanas el álbum fue número 1 en las listas estadounidenses y estuvo tres años en las listas británicas. Sorprendentemente, los Dire Straits aparecieron por primera vez en una época en la que se sentía aversión por lo más tarde llegarían a ser: la escena punk londinense de 1976-1997.

Mark Knopfler (nacido el 12 de agosto de 1949 en Glasgow, Escocia) y su hermano David Knopfler (nacido el 27 de diciembre de 1952 en Glasgow, Escocia) eran hijos de un arquitecto que se mudó a Newcastle-upon-Tyne (Inglaterra) cuando ellos eran pequeños. Mark Knopfler estudió literatura inglesa en la Universidad de Leeds y durante un tiempo trabajó como periodista en el Yorkshire Evening Post y en un periódico local de Essex. Al terminar la universidad, estuvo tocando a tiempo parcial en una banda de pub llamada Brewer’s Droop, pero sus ingresos procedían mayoritariamente de la enseñanza .Los Knopfler se marcharon a Londres a principios de los 70 y Mark conoció al bajista John Illsley (nacido el 24 de junio de 1949 en Leicester, Inglaterra) y al batería Pick Withers. Illsley, licenciado en sociología, trabajaba en una tienda de discos y Withers había sido un batería de sesión durante varios años.

No era un buen momento para el grupo porque el punk se había apoderado de la música y la mayoría de los sellos del Reino Unido no estaban interesados en promocionar la música esmerada de los Dire Straits. Una canción de su repertorio empezó a destacar, una básica progresión de blues de letra tierna, “Sultans Of Swing”. La escuchó el propietario de Oval Records y Radio London DJ, Charlie Gillett, y a finales de 1977 el grupo ya grababa su primer trabajo, Dire Straits, para Vertigo Records con el productor Muff Winwood. “Sultans Of Swing” fue un éxito en Holanda primero y más tarde en el Top 10 británico. La poderosa Warner Brothers Records se hizo cargo de la distribución por Estados Unidos y enérgicamente respaldó el álbum hasta que en marzo de 1979 se convirtió en el número 2 de la lista Billboard. Su segundo single, “Lady Writer”, fue un relativo fracaso si bien no logró desvirtuar su atractivo como banda comercial. Communique, producido por Jerry Wexler y Barry Beckett, vendió tres millones de copias en todo el mundo.

Dejaba atrás el tono comercial de su primer trabajo, pero desarrollaba el lirismo cínico e incisivo característico de Knopfler. Antes de grabar Making Movies, David Knopfler optó por seguir su carrera en solitario y desde entonces ha publicado varios discos con algunos pequeños sellos independientes. Le sustituyó Hal Lindes, ex miembro de Darling, al tiempo que Alan Clark se ponía a los teclados. Knopfler recibió duras críticas por no variar su fórmula de composición musical, pero de todos modos el álbum produjo un single que llegó a situarse entre los 10 principales del Reino Unido, la conmovedora balada romántica “Romeo And Juliet”. En Estados Unidos, el álbum Love Over Gold dio mejores resultados que el anterior y uno de los singles, “Private Investigations”, llegó a ser número 2 en el Reino Unido en septiembre de 1982 .

Tras Love Over Gold, Knopfler se tomó un descanso para producir Infidels de Bob Dylan (1983), y escribió el éxito que marcó el regreso de Tina Turner, “Private Dancer”. Admirado como compositor y guitarrista excepcionalmente dotado, durante un tiempo pareció que los Dire Straits ya no volverían a grabar jamás debido al resto de compromisos de producción de Knopfler, con artistas tan variopintos como Aztec Camera, Randy Newman y Willy DeVille. No obstante, en 1983 se juntaron de nuevo con el ex batería de Man, Terry Williams, que suplantaba a Withers, y completaron una difícil gira mundial. Un álbum doble en directo, Alchemy Live, llenó el hueco que precedió al siguiente álbum de estudio de la banda, Brothers In Arms.

Al igual que muchos otros, la participación de los Dire Straits en el concierto Live Aid hizo aumentar sus ventas y la gira a lo largo de 200 poblaciones contribuyó a que fuera uno de los álbumes más vendidos de la década. Knopfler lo utilizó para hacer numerosas observaciones irónicas sobre su propia condición de estrella del rock, y se mofaba de la absurdidad de los vídeos y de la MTV en “Money For Nothing”, número 1 en Estados Unidos. Otras tres canciones del disco saltaron también a las listas de ambas orillas del Atlántico (”Walk Of Life”, “So Far Away” y la que dio nombre al álbum), con “Walk Of Life” en el número 2 del Reino Unido.Con Brothers In Arms aún pegando fuerte en las listas, Knopfler se embarcó de nuevo en otros proyectos. Ya había escrito la banda sonora de tres películas en 1983 y 1984 (Un tipo genial, Cal y Comfort and joy ) y en 1987 compuso la música para la comedia fantástica La princesa prometida. Por su parte, con los Dire Straits de descanso sabático prolongado, el bajista John Illsley aprovechó asimismo para editar dos álbumes en solitario, Never Told A Soul en 1984 y Glass en 1988, pero ninguno se vendió de forma significativa.

En 1990, Knopfler formó ad hoc una banda de pub de poco perfil con Brendan Croker y Steve Phillips, que se llamó the Notting Hillbillies. Su primer trabajo, titulado como el grupo, fue un álbum decepcionante y soporífico, y la banda se disolvió después de una gira por el Reino Unido. Durante el verano de 1991 los Dire Straits anunciaron un tour masivo de “regreso” y pusieron a la venta un nuevo álbum, On Every Street. Mientras Knopfler se afanaba por encontrar nuevos retos en otras esferas musicales, su grupo superaba los seis años que habían transcurrido entre un álbum y otro y seguía gozando de una popularidad increíble. Sobre todo, gracias a una magistral campaña de marketing a escala mundial y al prevaleciente atractivo resuelto de su música. Su gira mundial, que duró dos años, marcó sus primeros conciertos desde que en 1988 participaran en el concierto aniversario a Nelson Mandela en el estadio de Wembley en Londres, y quedó plasmada en su segundo álbum en directo, On The Night. Con Dire Straits en espera indefinida, Knopfler lanzó su primer álbum en solitario en 1996.

Ninemillion.org  : la web de los refugiados

El pasado 20 de junio se celebro el Día Mundial del Refugiado. Actualmente, hay 20,8 millones de refugiados en el mundo y más de nueve millones son niños. Microsoft y el Alto Comisionado de las Naciones Unidas (ACNUR) lanzan hoy el portal ninemillion.org, una ventana para conocer la situación de refugiados, desplazados y apátridas confinados en 117 países.

“Cuando visité Albania, lo último que esperé ver en Kosovo era tecnología de última generación, y eso es lo que me encontré en un campo de refugiados. La gente había perdido todo, no sólo les habían echado de su casa sino que habían quemado sus documentos de identificación, habían desaparecido legalmente del mapa. Las tarjetas de identificación que Microsoft realizó sirvieron para que volvieran a existir, a ser visibles. Esas tarjetas se convirtieron en su bien más preciado”.

La historia que contó Pablo Zapata, responsable de Ayuda al Refugiado de ACNUR en España, durante la presentación de la web ninemillion.org, es el ejemplo de la colaboración de Microsoft, desde 1999, con la organización internacional. Empleados de la compañía de Bill Gates se desplazan a campos y ponen en marcha programas de identificación, crean centros con conexiones a Internet para que los refugiados puedan conocer la situación de su país de origen o enseñan informática a los voluntarios de los campos para que éstos instruyan a los niños.

Zapata resaltó que la colaboración de las grandes empresas, Nike también participa en el nuevo portal, es muy importante. “Primero llegaron las ayudas de los Estados, después las de los particulares, hay 24.000 españoles que colaboran en ACNUR, y por último han llegado las grandes empresas que dan herramientas a los niños y que ponen su sabiduría al servicio de los refugiados”.

La consejera delegada de Microsoft Ibérica, Rosa García, explicó que durante las próximas cuatro semanas el portal de Microsoft, MSN, dará publicidad a la web www.ninemillion.org y hará visibles a los desplazados para millones de internautas. “Realizaremos más de 2800 millones de impactos, queremos incentivar a las personas para que colaboren con ACNUR. Hay que darse cuenta de la importancia de los refugiados”. La nueva página, traducida por Microsoft a nueve idiomas diferentes, recoge información sobre los millones de personas que han tenido que huir de su país y que se encuentran confinadas en más de un centenar de países. También, permite hacer donativos: 25 dólares (19 euros) es lo que cuesta enviar a una niña refugiada a la escuela todo un año.

Experiencia española en Kenia
María Jesús Cuesta, program manager de Microsoft, viajó a los campos de refugiados de Dadaab y Kakuma, situados en la frontera entre Kenia y Sudán, a finales de agosto de 2004. El objetivo era crear un sistema informático que incluyese una base de datos de los 300.000 refugiados del lugar y que mejorase las tareas de gestión y administrativas de los dos campos.

“Informatizamos los datos de los refugiados que antes se tenían que buscar entre kilos y kilos de papeles. Al darles una tarjeta de racionamiento con un número podíamos conocer el censo del campo, las tarjetas se convertían en su DNI. Si por ejemplo alguien venía nuevo al campo podíamos verificar rápidamente si había ya gente de su familia que había llegado antes. También gracias a una web cam todos los documentos llevaban su foto”.

Cuesta consiguió, entre otras cosas y tras casi un mes de trabajo, reducir las largas colas de espera de los refugiados para recibir la comida. “Hicimos informes para mejorar los repartos anuales de las tarjetas de racionamiento, también recogíamos estadísticas del número de nacimientos y así podíamos prever las comida que se iba a necesitar en el campo”, explica. Su ayuda permitió mejorar la vida de los miles de refugiados que esperan volver a sus países de origen. La trabajadora de Microsoft, afirma, con un entusiasmo contagioso, que la “experiencia fue increíble, volvería”.

Blackstrobe son el productor Arnaud Rebotini (aka Zend Avesta) y el Dj de moda en las discotecas ídem, Ivan Smagghe. Un mago en el estudio y un animal nocturno. Un fan del metal y un adicto al disco. Un hombre clásico y una dancefloor diva… Son la pareja de moda en Francia. Blackstrobe son al sonido sucio guitarrero con toques disco a lo made in NY, lo que Daft Punk al house-funk filtrado.

Es decir, un cacho de hype al que sólo a ti te toca decidir si desenmascararlos definitivamente o rendirles pleitesía at infinitum. Después de un par de maxis en Source Records ““Paris Acid City”- y Bak in Black “”Innerstrings”- ficharon por el sello de moda, Output, para confeccionar el enésimo hit de moda, un “Me and Madonna” nacido de las sospechosas “tratándose de los franceses nunca se sabe que es realmente indie y que no- aguas purulentas del underground. Bueno, más bien salido de la casualidad porque Trevor Jackson, dueño de Output, y la pareja comparten gustos musicales - Front 242, Bauhaus, Acid House, ACR…- y eso ayudó, y mucho, en las negociaciones para que el dichoso tema apareciera en el sello más dichoso del momento. Antes del verano sacaron a la venta un mini-LP en este mismo sello titulado “Chemical sweet girl E.P.” -con dos versiones del “Me and Madonna”, una de ellos con un remix a medias entre Ivan y Ewan Pearson- que les catapultó a los festivales más importantes del periodo canicular. Ivan Smagghe, además, estuvo pinchando en Freezer, el after de Benicàssim en una mañana que compartió cartel con Roman Flügel -que como Alter Ego remezcla el tema titular del mismo disco, “Chemical sweet girl”-.

Hemos bajado un peldaño para mostrar el lado menos indie del rock internacional, buscando temas que las bandas independientes reservan para las listas de éxitos. Sin caer en la comercialidad, ni en el sopor de la batería de Perales, queremos acercarte una hora de rock y electrónica que bien podría escucharse en cualquier pista de club de moda.

Llamados por la revista New Musical Express como “Potencialmente el grupo más importante desde Oasis”, The Music es hoy en día una de las promesas musicales más fuertes. Con el esperado “WELCOME TO THE NORTH” la banda londinense logrará satisfacer las expectativas creadas por su primer trabajo de estudio. En este nuevo álbum la banda se une al legendario productor Brendan O’Brien, quien ha trabajado con Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine, Bruce Springsteen, entre otros.

HoggboyArmado con un radiocasette de lo-fi demos, Hogg llega al Leadmill el local en donde se reunían diversos amigos y conocidos del barrio de Sheffield, dispuesto a reunir un grupo abanderado por la libertad de expresión y la frescura musical. Es entonces cuando Hugh, Bailey y Richy juran, como ellos mismos afirman, estar siempre unidos a Hogg por la causa. Sin aportar demasiadas novedades al archipoblada hornada de post-strokes, en 2001 presentan su primer disco or 8?. Su pretensión de convertirse en herederos de los Stooges o Sex Pistols, queda bastante alejada de la realidad en un grupo que se aferra más a las melodías que a los guitarrazos. Su primer single adquiere un relativo éxito y es aclamado por las prestigiosas cadenas Radio 1 y Channel 4. Esto les abre las puertas a América y en abril del mismo año, tocan en el legendario Mercury Lounge. Cuando vuelven a Nueva York en octubre el departamento de policía les recibe con los brazos abiertos: en la última visita fueron arrestados cuatro de los seis días que estuvieron allí.Su álbum debut es producido por Chris Thomas (Sex Pistols, Pulp, INXS, Beatles etc). Según el productor británico sólo los encuerados Hoggboy consiguieron agradarle los suficiente como para abandonar el retiro que le había alejado de la música durante cinco años. Una gira por UK, Japón y Australia completa la andadura no sólo musical de los nor-británico en 2002. En el FIB 2003 traen a España su or 8?, dispuestos a destrozar los tímpanos con los rasguidos de sus guitarras a quien se ofrezca para ello.

Los japoneses tienen ya cine con olor sincronizado. Las fragancias salen de las butacas o de algunos ordenadores conectados a Internet
Dos salas de la firma nipona de explotación de cines Shochiku proyectan desde el pasado fin de semana el filme estadounidense de aventuras El Nuevo Mundo mientras funciona un sistema informático, creado por NTT Communications, la filial del gigante de las telecomunicaciones NTT. El programa emite desde la parte posterior de las últimas butacas del cine -uno de ellos el Salonpas Louvre Marunouchi, en Tokio- siete aromas diferentes, que se suman a los efectos sonoros de alta tecnología de los que, desde hace décadas, disfrutan los espectadores.
Todas las butacas con el sistema incorporado fueron ocupadas en los cuatro pases que tuvo la película en cada una de las dos salas, en las que sus entradas cuestan el mismo precio, 1.800 yenes (12,60 euros) que las restantes, informaron fuentes de Shochiku. El nuevo servicio es mucho más sofisticado que el que fue aplicado el pasado año en varios cines japoneses que lanzaron olores a chocolate en las proyecciones de la película Charlie y la fábrica de chocolate, de Tim Burton.
En el filme El Nuevo Mundo la naturaleza ocupa un papel central y en él los aromas recuerdan el olor del bosque y de las flores que aparecen, así como otros, también florales, en las escenas románticas, mientras que una mezcla de hierbabuena y romero se deja sentir en los momentos tristes.
Este sistema operará hasta el próximo 5 de mayo, fecha en la que el grupo Shochiku habrá decidido si mantiene esta iniciativa, en función de la reacción de los espectadores, que hasta ahora se han mostrado favorables. NTT Comunications ha avanzado que las salas de cine podrán descargar aromas para otras películas desde su página en Internet que ofrece este servicio.
El pasado año, la empresa comenzó a ofrecer un sistema similar a los hogares en Japón, que, por el precio equivalente a 450 euros, podían “bajar” de la Red diversos programas que emitían aromas para acompañar la lectura del horóscopo o para sesiones de aromaterapia. NTT Communications no ha revelado cuántas máquinas con ese sistema ha vendido hasta ahora.-

Google ya sobrevuela España
El buscador presenta la versión local de su servicio de localización geográficaA vista de pájaro, o como si se estuviera consultando un callejero, utilizando el buscador de negocios o el de direcciones, Google Maps promete facilitar la localización de calles, negocios y servicios. La versión local para España de esta herramienta puede consultarse ya desde el ordenador o el móvil, traza rutas entre dos puntos e integra las funciones de búsqueda que han dado fama a la compañía.
El puerto de Cádiz visto con Google Maps España, en su versión híbrida, que muestra tanto el sentido de circulación de las calles como una visión cenital de la ciudad.
Google Maps se presentaba esta mañana en Madrid con la directora general del buscador, Isabel Aguilera, y Bernardo Hernández, director de marketing, como maestros de ceremonias. En el acto ambos han resaltado que el servicio insiste en el objetivo fundamental de la empresa fundada por Sergey Brin y Larry Page, hacer accesible de forma fácil y rápida a través de Internet. Google Maps España lleva a cabo esta tarea en el ámbito geográfico, proporcionando mapas detallados de las ciudades y fotografías tomadas desde satélites de buena parte del territorio nacional.
Sobre los planos y las imágenes cenitales “que pueden consultarse también de forma conjunta, en un híbrido de fotos aéreas y callejero que evita que uno se desoriente-, Google inserta información sobre los negocios y servicios: restaurantes, salas de conciertos, cines, estaciones de metro… Esta información proviene de las bases de datos de TPI ” Páginas Amarillas, con la que Google ha suscrito un acuerdo de cesión, así como de otros seis socios.
Valor añadido del nuevo servicio es la integración del buscador de Google esos datos de los socios y la información geográfica. En la portada (http://maps.google.es) tiene especial protagonismo el mapa de España, que ocupa buena parte de la pantalla. Encima de él, una caja de búsquedas ““una única caja, sin formularios que dificulten el proceso de búsqueda”, según explicaba Hernández- invita a introducir la dirección que se desea visualizar y la ciudad en que se encuentra. Como respuesta, Google Maps mostrará un mapa de la zona que puede ampliarse, o verse como si se estuviera sobrevolando.
También es posible buscar directamente un tipo de negocios o un establecimiento concreto, o pedir al sistema que trace una ruta entre dos puntos geográficos. Cuando se realiza una búsqueda y son varias las posibles respuestas, Maps muestra a la izquierda del mapa una serie de enlaces que pueden solucionar la pregunta del internauta. Es en esta zona donde por el momento se muestra la publicidad, sin que se prevea a corto plazo la presencia de anuncios en los mapas, según explicaba Aguilera.
Tal y como ha sucedido con otros servicios de Google, la versión española de Maps ha sido lanzada a la Red en una fase Beta o de pruebas. Mientras permanezca en este periodo, la compañía espera que mejore por varias vías. Una de ellas, mencionada por Aguilera durante la presentación, serán “las sugerencias de los usuarios”. También hay que tener en cuenta la inteligencia artificial del buscador, que interpretando las acciones de sus usuarios “viendo qué resultados reciben más clics- aprenderá a discernir qué negocios y servicios son más populares. Y lo hará rápido, según la compañía. “Google Maps es un niño de dos años que en seis meses será graduado en Harvard”, aseguraba el responsable de marketing durante la presentación.
Otra forma de mejora para el servicio provendrá del uso que de él hagan otras empresas, particulares o instituciones. Google utiliza para poner en marcha el sistema de localización geográfica software abierto a todo tipo de desarrolladores, programas que cualquiera puede utilizar para situar la información de que dispone sobre un mapa.
De esta forma, Google Maps espera constituirse en una plataforma sobre la que otros construyan servicios de todo tipo, algo que ya está sucediendo tanto en ciudades españolas como otros países donde esta herramienta también está en funcionamiento. El servicio, por cierto, puede consultarse también desde los teléfonos móviles que puedan navegar por Internet, sin necesidad de instalar ninguna aplicación.Fuente: elpais.es

Si en su primer trabajo, “Start Breaking My Heart”, la electrónica minimal envolvía canciones de corazón pop, en el nuevo trabajo del proyecto de Dan Snaith esa electrónica se convierte en un baño cálido de psicodelia por los cuatro costados.
Texturas envolventes que invitan a la distensión y a relajarse profundamente, sin dejar de prestar atención a sus sonidos. En algunos momentos se acercan con elegancia a propuestas como las de Salako o The Beta Band, sin la dispersión de los primeros y menos locura que los segundos. En ocasiones parecen querer rastrear en la pura psicodelia de los sesenta (“Bijoux”) con aire progresivo y floreado, contando con acertadas canciones realmente creadas para poder ser pinchadas como “Kid You´ll Move Mountains” en pleno éxtasis de sitar, sin perderse en la exploración de terrenos pantanosos que en demasiadas ocasiones derivan en la trivialidad de otras propuestas Consiguiendo además, gracias a su base tecnológica (ahí está “Crayon” dándole la mano a The Sea And Cake), devolvernos con suavidad a los tiempos que vivimos.

Hoy te traemos un corte de su anterior album.Habiendo definido hace tiempo ““Aparment Life” (Atlantic, 97)- los márgenes de sus posibilidades creativas, los neoyorquinos arriman el ascua a su sardina en diez versiones que, sin resultar reveladoras, aseguran no sólo su divertimento sino también el del oyente.Hay valentía, qué duda cabe, porque para mantener un careo con The Cure ““Let´s Go To Bed”- o The Go-Betweens ““Streets Of Your Town”- hacen falta arrestos, experiencia y claridad expositiva; pero también un cierto conservadurismo sobrevuela elecciones como “L´Anamour” “Serge Gaingsbourg- o “Diggin Your Scene” “The Blow Monkeys-. Por desgracia la oscura y arrastada toma de “Be My Baby” “The Ronettes- queda reducida a mera anécdota al no acertar el trío con el nudo y, sobre todo, el desenlace. ¿Las sorpresas? Dominique Durand emulando a Shivika Ashtana en un “Say Goodbye” (Papas Fritas) que, contra todo pronóstico, no consiguen arrebatar a los de Boston, y el hecho de que “Only A Fool Would Say That”, un tema de Steely Dan, reyes del pop AOR, parezca compuesto a su medida.

El festival se celebrará los días 23 y 24 de junio en el Parque Juan Carlos I de Madrid. Viña Rock 2006: VETAN LA ACTUACI”N DE SOZIEDAD ALCOHOLIKA
Viña Rock 2006, el festival de rock más duro, vuelve con polémica y con boicot de los patrocinadores a la actuación del grupo Soziedad Alkohólica, al que la Asociación de Víctimas del Terrorismo (AVT) acusa de apología del terrorismo, provocando el ‘éxodo’ de los patrocinadores.

La AVT solicitó tanto a la organización como al Ayuntamiento de Villarrobledo que el grupo vizcaino fuera eliminado del cartel. Sin embargo, tanto los organizadores como el Consistorio se negaron a hacerlo, y el festival ha seguido adelante a pesar de la marcha de los patrocinadores, en concreto: Coca-Cola, Caja Castilla-La Mancha, ‘La Verdad’ y Barceló.
No es la primera vez que la AVT presiona para que se censure al grupo vitoriano. La asociación presentó una denuncia contra la banda por un delito de enaltecimiento del terrorismo etarra a través de las letras de tres de sus canciones.
El juez de la Audiencia Nacional Baltasar Garzón archivó en 2004 la denuncia, alegando que, visto el contenido de las canciones y la fecha en la que fueron compuestas, “no se aprecia que estén hechas para enaltecer o justificar acciones terroristas o a los terroristas teniendo en cuenta, por lo demás, que (…) las canciones son anteriores” a la tipificación del enaltecimiento terrorista como delito, que se produjo el 22 de diciembre de 2000.

Además, actuaron un total de 20 grupos, entre ellos Soziedad Alkohólica, Bebe, Reincidentes, Su Ta Gar o War Cry. A las 3.30 de la madrugada se cerró la primera jornada de este macrofestival que volvió a sonar ayer por la tarde.

DEPECHE MODE.
Depeche Mode es el padre de la música electrónica formado en Basildon, condado de Essex, en Inglaterra. El grupo es uno de los más importantes exponentes de la música. Su álbum Violator de 1990 es una joya del movimiento Techno-rock de las décadas de los ochentas y noventas.

INTEGRANTES
El grupo está integrado por:
David Gahan (vocalista principal y actualmente también compositor), de 1980 a la fecha.
Martin Lee Gore (compositor, segundo vocalista, tecladista y guitarra), de 1980 a la fecha.
Andrew John Fletcher (tecladista y actualmente también bajista), de 1980 a la fecha.
Miembros anteriores:
Vincent Clarke (compositor y tecladista), de 1980 a 1981. Compositor de Erasure de 1985 a la fecha.
Alan Charles Wilder (tecladista, arreglista, ocasionalmente compositor y batería), de 1982 a 1995.

Los Ochenta, primer período.
El surgimiento de Depeche Mode se encuentra en un primer intento de dúo llamado No Romance in China formado por Vince Clarke y Andrew Fletcher en 1976, el cual no logró nada. Despúes Clarke formó con Martin L. Gore y con Rob Marlowe un nuevo grupo llamado French Look al cual se integraría nuevamente Andy Fletcher en lugar de Marlowe en 1979 dando origen al trío Composition of Sound en donde Martin Gore y Andrew Fletcher eran guitarristas y vocalistas, y Vince Clarke era compositor y tecladista.
Para 1980 reclutaron al vocalista David Gahan después de que Clarke lo contactara tras oírlo cantando Heroes de David Bowie cuando ensayaban. Desde aquel momento Gore y Fletcher cambiaron las guitarras por los sintetizadores, se convirtieron en un grupo de música tecnopop y cambiaron su nombre a Depeche Mode por sugerencia del mismo Gahan quien lo tomó de estar hojeando una revista de moda francesa llamada así.
Después de estar tocando puertas, el grupo pudo grabar una canción para un sello independiente de música electrónica llamado Some Bizarre, la canción era Photographic y apareció en un recopilatorio de nuevas promesas de ese sello, convirtiéndose así en su primera grabación para un disco. Semanas después el productor Daniel Miller, fundador del sello Mute Records y quien era uno de los que antes les había cerrado la puerta, los oyó tocar en directo y reconsideró su decisión por lo cual les dio una oportunidad al permitirles grabar su primer álbum a través de Mute y produciéndoselos él mismo, todo en un contrato únicamente verbal.
Ese primer disco de 1981, Speak & Spell, logró posicionarse en listas de éxitos sobre todo gracias al tema bailable Just Can’t Get Enough y obtuvo buenas críticas gracias al talento de Clarke para manejar el teclado por lo cual se le consideraba el “mago de los teclados”. El álbum se conforma casi en su totalidad por nueve canciones de Vince Clarke, incluida Photographic, más una canción y un tema instrumental compuestos por Martin Gore. Además de Just Can’t Get Enough el otro sencillo fue New Life. La canción I Sometimes Wish I Was Dead en la versión américana del álbum fue cambiada por la canción Dreaming Of Me, esta última también sencillo. Tras el relativo éxito del primer disco Vince Clarke abandonó el grupo alegando que esa no era la forma en que él quería trabajar.
Al no tener compositor principal, Martin L. Gore tomó el control creativo del grupo, la primera canción que compuso para Depeche Mode sin la presencia de Clarke fue See You y se convirtió en el mayor éxito que habían tenido hasta ese momento por lo cual realizaron una gira llamada así, See You Tour. Para ello necesitaron de un nuevo tecladista que tocara la parte de Clarke en los conciertos, así que pusieron un anuncio en la revista Melody Maker con el requisito de que no rebasara los 21 años. Alan Wilder en un principio mintió sobre su edad (ya tenía 22) para poder hacer la prueba, pero se quedó con el puesto.
En poco tiempo concretaron su segundo disco, A Broken Frame de 1982, que nuevamente fue producido por Daniel Miller. El disco tiene un sonido muy distinto al primero pero sobre todo cambió el contenido de las letras al mostrarse Gore mas introspectivo que Clarke. Generalmente se considera a éste como el peor disco de Depeche Mode, incluso Martin Gore ha llegado a declarar eso, sin embargo contiene los primeros clásicos del grupo, Leave In Silence y la misma See You; el tercer sencillo fue The Meaning Of Love.
Es en el disco A Broken Frame en el cual aparecen por primera vez como trío, Alan Wilder no tuvo nada que ver con su proceso creativo, y aunque ya aparece como miembro en el video de la canción Leave In Silence, fue cuando ya estaba concluido el álbum que se integró formalmente a la banda. La primer canción que Alan Wilder grabó con Depeche Mode fue Get The Balance Right.
Nuevamente como cuarteto se pusieron a trabajar en su siguiente disco, Construction Time Again de 1983, otra vez producido por Miller y en el cual colaboró el ingeniero Gareth Jones. El disco se compone de siete nuevas canciones de Martin Gore y dos de Alan Wilder, quien se metió de lleno en el grupo encargándose de casi todo el trabajo de producción. Hay quienes consideran a este disco el primer trabajo verdaderamente importante de Depeche Mode, por su sonido más depurado y porque comenzaron a experimentar con los sampleos (lo cual no era muy frecuente en esa época). Ellos mismos han llegado a decir que aún era un trabajo pretencioso, de cualquier modo el tema Everything Counts de ése álbum es considerado por algunos como una de las mejores canciones en la trayectoria de la banda. Además de Everything Counts se lanzó también la canción Love, In Itself como sencillo, siendo el único álbum de estudio del grupo del cual se han desprendido solamente dos sencillos, aunque hubo ediciones limitadas del tema Told You So también como sencillo.
En 1984 apareció la compilación People Are People, un EP que en su momento hizo de primer disco en América y que contiene por primera vez el tema que le da nombre. Poco después apareció su cuarto álbum, Some Great Reward, producido por Daniel Miller y Gareth Jones, que contiene siete nuevas canciones de Martin Gore, además de la canción People Are People (que formalmente se desprende como sencillo de ese disco) y una nueva de Alan Wilder. El disco fue escandaloso por sus letras sensuales y provocativas, e incluso debido a ello fueron censurados del concierto Live Aid. Aunque ese álbum musicalmente es parecido al Construction Time Again hay quienes piensan que fue el primer disco verdaderamente bien logrado de Depeche Mode por lo atrevido de sus letras y por seguir arriesgándose al experimentar con nuevos sonidos y recursos técnicos, y lo consideran dentro los mejores trabajos que han hecho. Además de People Are People, los otros sencillos fueron Master And Servant, Blasphemous Rumours y su lado b Somebody.
1985 fue su primer año sabático pero apareció la compilación Catching Up With Depeche Mode en Norteamérica, que recoge temas de los cuatro discos que llevaban hasta ese momento, además de cuatro nuevas canciones de las cuales Shake The Disease e It’s Called a Heart fueron los sencillos promociónales. Paralelamente apareció en Europa la compilación The Singles 81-85 (con el mismo arte de portada y los mismos sencillos promociónales que de hecho formalmente se desprenden de este disco) así como el VHS Some Great Videos. También existe de ese año el VHS titulado The World We Live In And Live In Hamburg que como su nombre dice recoge un concierto dado en esa ciudad alemana.
En 1986 apareció su siguiente disco, Black Celebration, nuevamente producido por Miller y Gareth Jones, y que se convertiría otra vez en su trabajo más exitoso hasta el momento y otra vez considerado por algunos como su primer gran disco. Ese álbum se distinguió por la diversidad musical mostrada en los temas que lo componen, la experimentación, y por manejar un sonido un tanto más oscuro. Los sencillos del disco fueron, Stripped, Question Of Time y Question Of Lust. La canción But Not Tonight, inicialmente lado b del sencillo Stripped, fue incluida de último momento en el álbum por lo cual no aparece la letra en el booklet y además de los videos de los tres sencillos se realizó también su video debido a que fue empleada en los créditos de la película Modern Girls y a que de hecho fue sencillo para los Estados Unidos. Fue también a partir de ese disco que comenzaron a trabajar con el fotógrafo holandés Anton Corbijn, quien desde el momento se convirtió en el diseñador de producción de Depeche Mode.
Para el siguiente año trabajaron por primera vez con un productor distinto a Daniel Miller o a Gareth Jones. El disco Music for the Masses de 1987 producido por David Bascombe los convirtió en uno de los grupos más importantes de la década y las canciones Behind The Wheel, Strangelove y Never Let Me Down Again se convirtieron en temas de éxito del grupo; además de aquellas la canción Little 15 fue sencillo para Europa.
Con ese disco entraron de lleno al mercado de los Estados Unidos y realizaron una gira constituida de 101 presentaciones, la última de ellas publicada en 1989 en un álbum doble precisamente titulado 101 (one-oh-one en inglés) que recoge la presentación del 18 de junio de 1988 en el Rose Bowl de Pasadena California, y que es su primer álbum en vivo; la canción Everything Counts en vivo fue lanzada como sencillo de ése álbum. También en ese año se lanzó el VHS Strange. Asimismo existe de 1989 la edición en VHS del 101, aunque sólo con la mitad de las canciones, el resto es un documental realizado por el director D.A. Pannebaker sobre el paso del grupo por los Estados Unidos.
En 1989 Martin Gore llevó a cabo su primer álbum solista, Counterfeit, a la par que siguió trabajando en Depeche Mode.

Los Noventa, segundo período.
Fue en 1989 que se comenzó a escuchar en la radio el tema Personal Jesus del álbum Violator que apareció hasta 1990, esta vez producido por Mark Ellis, quien es más conocido en el mundo de la música como Flood, y que cambió por completo el sonido del grupo hacia algo más oscuro, sofisticado y elegante. La canción Personal Jesus es normalmente el tema más conocido de Depeche Mode hasta la fecha, y la canción Enjoy The Silence es generalmente el tema más gustado entre los seguidores del grupo. Aparte de esas dos canciones se lanzaron otros dos sencillos, World In My Eyes y Policy Of Truth, además de que se realizaron seis videos en total: los de ésos cuatro sencillos y los de los temas Halo y Clean; los seis videos se pueden encontrar en el VHS Strange Too. El disco Violator habitualmente es considerado el mejor álbum que Depeche Mode ha realizado en su historia.
Después de la gira con el Violator se pusieron a trabajar en su siguiente disco, el cual apareció hasta 1993, Songs of Faith and Devotion, nuevamente producido por Flood y en el cual se dio un cambio total en el sonido del grupo, notablemente influido por el movimiento grunge que en aquella época estaba en su apogeo, lo cual consta en los cuatro sencillos del álbum, I Feel You, Walking In My Shoes, Condemnation e In Your Room; aparte de aquéllas cuatro también se realizó el video de la canción One Caress que fue sencillo en los Estados Unidos.
La influencia grunge del Songs of Faith and Devotion se dio sobre todo en la imagen del grupo, musicalmente si bien se orientaron hacia el rock también tenía parte de lo que habían estado haciendo desde el inicio de su carrera, el cambio se encontró en haber incorporado instrumentos acústicos en lugar de sólo los sintetizadores y los sampleos. En aquel momento muchas revistas especializadas consideraron que el grupo se alejaría cada vez más de la música con la que se habían dado a conocer. El disco Songs of Faith and Devotion también apareció como álbum en directo simplemente titulado Songs of Faith and Devotion Live convirtiéndose en su segundo disco en vivo, consecuentemente también apareció un VHS en vivo con el título de Devotional que es como se llamó la gira.
Durante el Devotional Tour David Gahan ya evidenciaba un creciente problema de adicción a las drogas, además, para 1994 la gira se extendió con el nombre de Exotic Tour, la cual prácticamente fue toda una nueva gira. Andy Fletcher comenzó con el grupo esa extensión del Devotional Tour, pero dado el desgaste físico que esto representaba, la mala relación que él y Alan Wilder siempre habían tenido, su carácter ya de por sí depresivo, la imparable adicción de Gahan a las drogas además de que Gore ya tenía problemas parecidos y en general la enorme tensión de llevar a cabo una gira tan prolongada le hicieron tomar la decisión de abandonarla después de las primeras presentaciones por lo que debió ser sustituido por Daryl Bamonte, colaborador en éste y en el anterior disco, quien concluyó con el resto del grupo el Exotic Tour.
Durante el Devotional Tour y el Exotic Tour los miembros de Depeche Mode vivieron excesos de los que actualmente ninguno desea hablar públicamente, Martin Gore y David Gahan llegaron a desvanecerse y hasta a sufrir ataques cardiacos en el escenario, sin embargo el grupo concluyó la extenuante gira a mediados de 1994 dejando los incidentes de Gahan y Gore así como la ausencia de Fletcher en el Exotic Tour tan sólo como aparentes episodios aislados.
En 1995 comenzarían a trabajar en lo que sería su siguiente disco, sin embargo David Gahan tuvo una hospitalización de emergencia por un intento de suicidio debido a una sobredosis, poco tiempo después Alan Wilder dejó la banda. Oficialmente el abandonó de Wilder se debió a diferencias laborales, aunque en realidad salió por la condición de Gahan, por la aceptación de Martin Gore de que estaba “peleando con sus demonios internos” y por la mala relación que llevaba con Andrew Fletcher. Después de la salida de Wilder la prensa vaticinó que era el principio del fin de Depeche Mode.
En 1996 Andrew Fletcher se reunió con Martin Gore para comenzar a trabajar en un nuevo álbum ya sin Alan Wilder, sin embargo David Gahan estaba ya completamente hundido en las drogas. Después de unos días meditándolo lo llamaron para grabar con ellos, pero pronto recayó de nuevo en su adicción por lo que se pensó muy seriamente en excluirlo del grupo, Gahan recibió entonces una advertencia por parte de las autoridades norteamericanas de impedirle la entrada a los Estados Unidos si no solucionaba su problema e irónicamente fue por ello que comenzó a rehabilitarse, por su parte Gore y Fletcher decidieron darle su lugar en Depeche Mode y esperarlo, mientras que el disco debió tomarse para su realización unos meses más.
Hasta 1997, nuevamente reducidos a trío, Depeche Mode concretó su nuevo álbum, Ultra, que fue producido por Tim Simenon. Era un año en que la música electrónica nuevamente se había puesto de moda y el disco provocó críticas encontradas pues en él el grupo volvía a la música electrónica por lo cual tuvieron elogios de la prensa, por otro lado hubo quienes lo criticaron de ser un disco inseguro y poco arriesgado, además de que no se llevó a cabo gira debido al estado en que aún se encontraban, sólo dos pequeños conciertos ante la prensa con el nombre de Ultra Parties. Daniel Miller por su parte insistió en calificarlo como un disco de transición.
El disco Ultra se distingue porque las canciones son particularmente largas (casi todas rebasan los cinco minutos), además de contener tres cortos temas “instrumentales” (menores a tres minutos cada uno) notoriamente producto de la novedad del Trip Hop, así como también por haber tenido varias participaciones de músicos de apoyo para llenar el vacío dejado por Wilder. Los cuatro sencillos fueron Barrel Of A Gun, It’s No Good, Home y Useless, y el título Ultra a decir de los integrantes se debió a que sonaba bien no porque reflejara algún cambio en la banda. También con motivo del álbum Ultra, en 1997 apareció el sitio oficial de la banda en Internet, depeche mode dot com.
Para el siguiente año se publicó una compilación de sencillos de los seis últimos álbumes (o sea, los cinco de estudio y el 101), en un álbum doble simplemente titulado The Singles 86>98 con el sencillo promocional Only When I Lose Myself. Esa compilación también apareció en un DVD titulado The Videos 86>98 que como su nombre indica contiene los videos de todas aquellas canciones y que es su primer material en ese formato.
Con esa compilación realizaron una pequeña gira para la cual reclutaron a dos músicos de apoyo en sustitución de Alan Wilder, el baterista austriaco Christian Eigner que ya había participado con ellos en las Ultra Parties, y el tecladista Peter Gordeno. El resultado obtenido fue tan bueno que poco después publicaron una compilación paralela de los faltantes discos llamada The Singles 81>85, que es en realidad una nueva edición del previo The Singles 81-85 pero con la curiosidad de contener la versión original de Photograhic del disco de Some Bizarre.

Depeche Mode en el nuevo siglo.
Con el mismo ritmo de trabajo mas espaciado de los últimos años, hasta el año 2001 lanzaron su siguiente disco, Exciter, producido por Mark Bell, que fue comparado con el Black Celebration debido a la diversidad musical de los temas que lo componen y en donde otra vez tuvieron distintas colaboraciones. El álbum provocó nuevamente opiniones encontradas aunque en general obtuvo buena recepción, los cuatro sencillos demuestran su diversidad musical, el tecnopop de Dream On, el house de I Feel Loved, la balada Freelove y hasta la canción de cuna Goodnihgt Lovers (sencillo sólo en Europa). Con ese disco bajo el brazo se embarcaron en una nueva gira, el Exciter Tour, nuevamente con el apoyo de Eigner y de Gordeno.
La presentación del 10 de octubre del 2001 en el Palais Omnisport de la Ciudad Luz, fue publicada en DVD con el título de One Night In Paris, convirtiéndose en su primer álbum en vivo en ese formato.
En 2002 apareció una nueva edición del Videos 86>98, en dos discos. En 2003 Dave Gahan realizó su primer álbum solista, Paper Monsters, en donde él compuso buena parte de sus propias canciones y con el que incluso salió de gira. De la misma manera apareció también en ese año el segundo disco en solitario de Martin Gore, Counterfeit 2. Asimismo Andrew Fletcher fundó su propio sello especializado en promover música electrónica de donde ya resultó el dueto Client.
En 2003 y 2004 respectivamente se lanzaron para DVD los ya existentes 101 y Devotional. También en 2004 apareció el sencillo promocional Enjoy the Silence ‘04 antecediendo a la colección de tres discos titulados Remixes 81-04 que como su nombre dice contienen variadas mezclas de canciones de la trayectoria del grupo realizadas por conocidos músicos especializados en ello. También en ese año apareció una colección de seis cajas conteniendo todos los sencillos del grupo.
En octubre del 2005 se publicó su último álbum hasta el momento, Playing the Angel, producido por Ben Hillier y en donde por primera vez aparecen tres temas compuestos por Dave Gahan, quien los escribió animado por el éxito de su proyecto solista. La banda inició en noviembre la gira promocional Touring the Angel acompañados de sus ya conocidos músicos de apoyo por los Estados Unidos y Canadá, la cual en el año 2006 se centra en Europa e incluso visitará México en donde encontrarán su aforo más grande ante 55,000 personas el 5 de mayo; la gira más larga que han realizado desde 1994.
Una versión preliminar del disco fue objeto de piratería por Internet un mes antes de su lanzamiento. Fuera de ello, Precious fue el primer sencillo, un tema escrito por Martin Gore que habla sobre los sentimientos tras la separación de un ser querido, inspirada en su reciente divorcio. La función industrial A Pain That I’m Used To es el segundo; Suffer Well de David Gahan es el tercero, lo cual la convierte en la primer canción no compuesta por Martin Gore que Depeche Mode lanza como sencillo en 25 años; ha trascendido además que John the Revelator será el cuarto sencillo.
El álbum ha provocado la misma reacción que los dos anteriores discos, mientras que algunos medios norteamericanos lo han calificado de malísimo, las revistas musicales inglesas lo han considerado como uno de los mejores álbumes en la trayectoria del grupo, la cual al parecer es la opinión prevaleciente pues el disco está logrando importantes posiciones de popularidad que no se habían alcanzado con los dos anteriores álbumes.
El disco muestra un Depeche Mode más cercano a la corriente de Música industrial, lo cual ya habían experimentado en sus primeros años con los álbumes Construction Time Again y Some Great Reward, aunque a veinte años de distancia de aquellos el disco Playing the Angel es de sonido mucho más agresivo.
La banda ha anunuciado que relanzará sus diez anteriores álbumes con todos sus lados b como bonus tracks en formato de SACD y DVD.
Algunas personas piensan que tras la salida de Alan Wilder el grupo ya no ha sido el mismo, otros sólo lo ven como una etapa diferente de Depeche Mode lo cual explicaría el recibimiento que han tenido los tres últimos discos.
Tradicionalmente designada como banda de música electrónica, Depeche Mode ha rebasado los estándares para ser considerado actualmente como un grupo de música alternativa.
Depeche Mode ha vendido más de 70 millones de discos.

Durante un ensayo en 1981 de Composition of sound, a Dave Gahan hojeando Depeche Mode, revista de modas francesa que hasta la fecha se sigue publicando, se le ocurrió que ese era un buen nombre, a todos les gustó y así se pusieron. Si bien afamaron ese nombre en esa publicación nunca hubo acciones legales porque les hayan tomado el título.

Como en varios grupos europeos, no todas las canciones las canta el vocalista, Martin Gore, compositor del grupo, canta un par de canciones en casi todos los discos y es ahí en donde está lo curioso, tiene la voz muy parecida a la de David Gahan, lo que se puede escuchar por ejemplo en los sencillos Somebody, Question of lust, One Caress y Home de diferentes álbumes; de hecho el tecnológico grupo que es Depeche Mode rara vez hace efecto de eco con la voz de David Gahan, es siempre Martin Gore el que le hace segunda voz. Los no seguidores del grupo no siempre se dan cuenta de esta situación. En muy pocas canciones del repertorio total de Depeche Mode se escucha sólo la voz de David Gahan. Por ejemplo, en But Not Tonight, Rush y Freestate.

Martin Gore siempre ha inspirado sus canciones en música blues. Sus letras siempre giran en torno a los temas que él considera los más importantes en la vida de todo ser humano: el amor, la religión y el sexo.

El estribillo de la canción Behind the Wheel, sencillo del álbum Music for the Masses (1987), dice you’re behind the wheel tonight, “tú estas tras del volante esta noche”. Independientemente de lo que pueda entenderse Martin Gore compuso esa canción porque no sabe conducir.

El disco A Broken Frame es generalmente considerado el peor en la historia de Depeche Mode, irónicamente se considera a su portada una de las mejores fotos que se tomaron de 1980 a 1990.
Martin Gore ha declarado que las peores canciones que ha compuesto para Depeche Mode son A Photograph of You, Satellite (ambas del A Broken Frame) y Get The Balance Right (de la compilación People Are People, y que inclusive se lanzó como sencillo).

En 1993 entraron al Libro Guinness de Récords por ser el grupo con más versiones distintas de sus canciones.

Los únicos covers que Depeche Mode ha grabado son Route 66, original de Nat King Cole, que aparece como lado b del sencillo Behind the Wheel; la canción Never Turn Your Back on Mother Earth original del dueto norteamericano Sparks y que es una “grabación rara” pues no se ha incluido en ningún material del grupo; así como Dirt, canción original de Iggy Pop, que aparece como lado b del sencillo I Feel Loved y que también fue parte del Soundtrack de la película estadounidense Resident Evil.

Por otra parte distintos grupos han hecho covers de DM. Algunos conocidos como:
Los Smashing Pumpkins que realizaron una versión de Never Let Me Down Again.
Marilyn Manson grabó una versión de Personal Jesus.
El grupo alemán Rammstein tiene su propia versión de Stripped
El grupo inglés The Cure grabó una versión de World in my Eyes.
El también grupo inglés Placebo realizó su propia versión de I Feel You.

Andy Fletcher declaró en el año 90 “Nosotros no nos sentimos deudores de Kraftwerk. Su trabajo nos gusta muchísimo y tengo casi todos sus discos, pero los hemos comprado mucho después de empezar a hacer música. La única deuda que podemos tener con ellos es que utilizaran antes que casi nadie sintetizadores y ordenadores para hacer música, pero cuando comenzamos nosotros oíamos pop más o menos electrónico, como el de OMD o The Human League“. “Respecto -continúa- a la posibilidad de haber influído en el house, es posible, aunque en este momento (año 90) nos interesa más la Electronic Body Music y las cosas que se están haciendo en Bélgica o Alemania. ¿Nitzer Ebb han dicho que nosotros les habíamos influído? me parece muy bien, es un grupo que a mí me gusta mucho, de hecho tengo una camiseta de ellos y ahí sí que pienso que puede haber más influencia nuestra”.

Skindive
Skindive desarrolla un tipo de música que aborda una combinación entre los dos géneros favoritos de Gerry Owens, el principal responsable y compositor de la banda, además de guitarrista y productor. Esos géneros se pueden basar en los arreglos sinfónicos de bandas sonoras de interpretes como Henry Mancini o Burt Bacharach, y la fuerza e intensidad de bandas de rock como Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana o Massive Attack.
Gerry Owens nació en Irlanda, concretamente en la ciudad de Dublín, y a los 8 años recibió como regalo un pequeño teclado de Casio que junto a las guitarras se convertiría en una de sus grandes pasiones. Años más tarde, Gerry se mudaría a Londres donde actuaría en las filas de varias formaciones locales, pero las abandonaría para volver de nuevo a Dublín donde llevaría a practica sus ideas musicales en 1997, de la mano de un nuevo proyecto llamado Skindive.
En Dublín comienza a elaborar la música del grupo y llega a la conclusión de que su música solo puede ser interpretada por una mujer, con lo que comienza una interminable búsqueda para encontrar una vocalista. En esas fechas, se realizan numerosas pruebas entre muchas candidatas, pero no logra encontrar a su vocalista hasta que uno de sus descartes le da una referencia de una amiga suya, la cual vivía en Estados Unidos. Está sería Danielle Harrison, una exquisita y sugerente voz, a la que se le envía una maqueta. Seguido de esto, Danielle decide realizar un viaje desde Los Angeles hasta Irlanda para encontrarse con Gerry y el resto de la banda, el bajista Alan Lee y el batería Ger Farrell. Al probar con el grupo es invitada a unirse a Skindive y Danielle decide instalarse en Dublín.
El proceso de composición de su primer disco se prolongaría durante varios años, sin dejar de ser curioso que parte del material que recogían sus primeras grabaciones y maquetas, se llegaría a utilizar dentro del disco. Para su confección, se involucrarían gente como Adrian Sherwood, Dave Ogilvie, Tom Baker y The Irish Film Orchestra, que le dotarían de una atmósfera grandilocuente. En el 2001, se editaría su homónimo álbum, llegando a ser comparados con bandas como Garbage, aunque en este caso ellos ofrecerían unas grandes dosis de arreglos sinfónicos y contundentes guitarras.
Posteriormente, Skindive iniciaría un Tour en el cual comenzarían a elaborar nuevas canciones dentro de un estudio móvil, siendo estas nuevas composiciones definidas por Gerry como una conjunción de guitarras más heavys y densas de que lo que fue su primera entrega.

Bill Gates provoca un cortocircuito en el ordenador de Hacienda.

Los ordenadores convencionales de la oficina fiscal de Estados Unidos (EEUU) son insuficientes para gestionar la declaración de la renta del hombre más rico del mundo, Bill Gates, que dijo que su fortuna, calculada en 38.900 millones de euros, tiene que procesarla un ordenador especial.
Gates explicó que los ordenadores convencionales del fisco estadounidense “no pueden manejar tanto número” como él tiene en su cuenta corriente, por lo que sus datos fiscales tienen que ser almacenados en un ordenador especial. El fundador de Microsoft, la empresa líder en aplicaciones informáticas, que hizo estas declaraciones durante una conferencia en Lisboa, está disgustado porque recibe constantemente avisos de morosidad por culpa de “un ordenador que no sirve”, añadió en un comentario emitido por televisión. Entonces, Gates explica que, una vez solucionado el malentendido, el fisco le envía otra notificación “diciendo cuánto lo sienten” por haberle mandado el aviso por error.
