What we heard: For years, rumors have bounced around that Blizzard is secretly developing a third installment in its groundbreaking Diablo role-playing series. Just this past February, a flurry of speculation followed the posting of several job listings for leads to join “the team behind Diablo I and II” for “an unannounced PC project.”

Now, the rumor forge is heating up again, thanks to an interview with Richard A. Knaak, author of three Diablo-based books”Diablo: Legacy of Blood (2001), Diablo: The Kingdom of Shadow (2002), and Diablo: Moon of the Spider (2006). Knaak has also written novels based on Warcraft and the Dungeon & Dragons Dragonlance spin-off. He is currently penning a series of novels featuring the classic fantasy character”and future massively multiplayer online role-playing game hero”Conan the Barbarian.

To promote his forthcoming Diablo book, Diablo: The Sin War: Book One: Birthright, Knaak spoke with Blizzplanet.com and took questions from its readers. However, the biggest bomb came from a site staffer going by the handle “Medievaldragon,” who casually asked if his latest book”the first of a trilogy”would “impact in the storyline of Diablo 3 the game.”

Knaak responded candidly, saying, “The ramifications here will be used for any future project…and I ain’t writing for a dead game. .” (Emoticon in the original.) A Report from Oaxaca by the British Journalist Who the Radio Declared Dead for an Hour After Brad Was Gunned Down

During the course of our lives, transcendental moments come along, and we are forced to sit up and take notice. Everybody has their moments. We all react differently.

It is difficult to figure out how to begin retelling the story of any one of those moments. Presumably, it is up to each person to do their best to convey the transcendence felt, and for each listener to absorb it as their own.

In this instance, all I can do is begin by telling you that, yesterday, for around a hundred minutes, I was dead.

Sometime between five and five-thirty in the afternoon, yesterday, Friday, October 27, in broad daylight, a White Owl circled above our house. My friend Jonathan watched it from the balcony. I never saw it. Hovering completely still, he said, 50 feet above his head, it had been staring straight at him for several minutes. Yet in the split-second it took him to come into the house, tell me to come out and see it, and step back outside, the White Owl had disappeared. Jonathan was aghast. He felt I wasn’t meant to see it.

As we considered the meaning of it all, my cell-phone rang. It was my friend Diablo, the crime reporter. In other words - I later realized - the Devil was calling me up to remind me of my fate. He immediately asked if I was okay. A foreign journalist had been shot in the city center. Said he thought the guy’s name was Andrés. I didn’t know anyone by that name. “Call Victor,” said Diablo, “he’s down at the scene.”

So I called Victor. It was a bad line. In bad English, he told me the guy’s name was Bradley. Bradley Roland Will. Bullet in the chest. Died on his way to hospital. Worked for Indymedia. Only Jonathan standing next to me could describe my expression when I heard the news. Bradley. It was Bradley. Brad! Brad, who I had met the week before when we coincided at a apprehension of a group of drunken youths who had assaulted a young couple. We had both been filming. It was the first time I had met a foreign journalist since I started filming the uprising in Oaxaca. Of course, we spoke, exchanged details, shared a few jokes, agreed to swap footage, and I set him up with a few people who could suggest where he could film. Real nice guy; a real, nice, honest guy doing his best to record events in this fucked-up situation with the hope of a grabbing few crumbs of attention from the world’s news consumers. Brad, you called me the morning of Friday, October 27, your last day on earth, to ask where you could rent a motorbike. Now, you’re gone. You’re the first foreign casualty since the region was plunged into this living hell. The thirteenth casualty in all. And, sadly, probably the most important of all.

Naturally, my first thought was, “it could have been me.” And, for a while, it was me.

I tell Victor to wait for me at the office, then grab a small digital camera, jump on the bike and head straight down to the scene. As the sun went down, the world grew dark.

I decide to detour to the incident, but it was very hard to get through. The barricades were being reinforced. Trucks had unloaded tons of earth to block the streets at strategic points. I spoke to someAPPOpeople (News-speak: “leftist protesters”; State prosecutor: “urban guerrilla terrorists”), the same people who had tried to keep Brad from passing out after he got shot and had bundled him into the back of a VW bug to take him to a private hospital (he died en route), the same people who set up barricades to protect themselves and their neighborhoods from criminals and paramilitary hitmen who in recent weeks have restarted their drive-by shooting campaign.

What you will not be told by most media, especially in Mexico, is that the three hitmen that attacked the barricade, where Brad and other journalists were, have been identified as local policemen. They wielded AR-15 rifles and various pistols and fired indiscriminately into the crowd. Brad was probably not targeted (even though state radio (Radio Ciudadania: 99.1FM- pirate government radio broadcasting from unknown location) is saying Brad “was an armed terrorist, and there is more to this than meets the eye” and “Indymedia is a branch of theAPPO”), but he was the unlucky one, hit full in the chest, right in the solar plexus, by a 9mm wide pellet of steel traveling at around 1000 meters per second.

What you probably won’t hear either is that theAPPOpeople do not carry any firearms. Their only weapons are rocks, clubs, molotov cocktails, and the occasional home-made fireworks mortar. To my knowledge, in five months of protests, they haven’t fired a single shot from a firearm. All the casualties have been on the side of the ‘protesters,’ eitherAPPOor teachers. It may well be true that theAPPOdoes have an array of firearms, but have taken a brave political decision not to use them.

Dropping a few names, theAPPOlets me through the barricades and I arrive at the neighborhood of El Bajio where Victor was waiting for me. I know a lot of people in the area. A group of local journalists have a dingy office here, in a concrete block that stinks of urine. A police blotter, Noti Roja, run by crime news godfather El Chiricuto, is based upstairs. And, next door, Diablo has a bare spare room with a mattress where I sometimes stay the night. I often come here to hang out, get information, check out any new footage and photos, and have a beer. Chiricuto, Victor, Bermudez, Teo, Zurco, Diablo, Chavez: I have known them all for about three years. And, I’m a tall white guy with a rat-tail, so the whole neighborhood knows me, even if I’ve never spoken to some of them.

When I turn up, at around 7:OOpm, there are about 20 people gathered in the street. Some are crying. As I pull up on the motorbike, I call out to Chiricuto. Seeing me, his face drops. He looks angry. “Yon! Is that you, Yon’!” The others turn to look at me, aghast. I realize they are all drunk. But they look like they have all seen a ghost. In fact, they are staring straight at one. “What do you mean’” I ask. “Fuckin’ Yon, get off the bike!”

I still don’t get it. As I turn off the engine and dismount, Chiricuto approaches slowly. He pinches my arm. “Yon!” he exclaims, wrapping his arms around me.

Teo cries out, totally wasted: “I fuckin’ told you! I told you so! Yon, only I really believed!”

Chiricuto: “Yon, you were dead! We all thought you were dead!” Everybody on the street gathers around, frantically hugging me. Chiricuto is overwhelmed. “My son! My son! He is still alive!” He pulls out the camera and starts clicking away. Everybody wants a picture with the dead guy. People start flooding out of their houses.

Teo: “They said your name on the radio! They said you had been shot and killed! Zurco said he saw your body in the back of a VW bug! You were foaming at the mouth! He has been crying ever since. You need to go and see them! (Referring to the people at the barricade, three blocks away where I had been filming). They all think you are dead.”

Chiricuto comes back with a 5-litre plastic tub of mezcal. “This is for you, you have to pour everyone a drink. It is mezcal for the Dead.” As I start to pour out little shots for everybody, he tells me he had been crying. “There could be ten dead… but not Yon. If Yon goes down, I swear the governor is next.” The wiry little Chiricuto, talking like a revolutionary tiger. I spill a drop of mezcal on the floor before downing the shot, in recognition of my fate. Between crying out to people to come out onto the street, spreading the news and taking photos of us all, Chiricuto goes on: “We were about to go and pick you up from the morgue and were going to hold a wake for you… all of us here… in the centre of the graveyard over there.” We were standing a block from the gates of the city cemetery; the street here is called Caminito al Cielo: “Little path to the sky.”

I had arrived at my own wake. Tears welled up and rolled down my cheek. For them, my one hundred-minute flatline was over.

I celebrated my own resurrection with them for about half an hour. I explained to them that the guy who had been killed was a friend of mine and that I had to take care of a few things. I had a lot on my mind: I had to contact Zurco; I had to find Brad’s body - because I figured I might be the one to identify him - which also meant going to the city morgue - no easy task; I had to contact the embassy - both the US embassy for Brad, and the UK embassy for me. What if my name had gone out over the radio, and the embassy got wind of it and tried to notify my parents’ I don’t even want to think about that possibility… But, I had no phone numbers. What I did have with me was that minor miracle called a cell-phone. I fished it out and flicked through the contacts list.

First, I decided to call Pati, a wonderful young girl who stoically manned the roadblock that Zurco was in charge of. Her friend Olga picked up, who I also knew. As soon as I said “it’s me, John”, she flipped out. All she could say was “Yon’ is that you, Yon’ Yon, is that really you’!” She must have said it twenty times, until all I could do was shout: “Olga, it’s me! It’s me! Calm down! I’m on my way over there!”

I jumped on the bike and headed to the roadblock, which was 300 yards away. As I approached, I noticed the scene felt much more sinister than on previous nights. This time they had assembled around a dozen public buses to block off the ten streets that make up this major intersection. Fires raged all around: burning tires, sofas, telegraph poles. All electric lights were off. I turned off the lights on the bike as I drew closer, a standard practice. They flashed a huge floodlight in my face, shouting,“No hay paso! Date la vuelta!”(”There is no way through, turn around!”).

“It’s me, John!” I shouted back.

“Yon’! Is that you, Yon’!” Olga and Pati screamed like little girls and rushed over to me, hugging and kissing me. “Thank God you are ok! My mum hasn’t stopped crying! We heard on the radio that you had been shot and killed! Zurco said he saw your body in a car!” The rest of the barricade crew ran over. There must have been a hundred people circled around me. They hugged me and shook my hand and patted me on the back. One old lady wouldn’t let go of my arm. The big man Zurco came over and crushed me with a big hug. His wife was in tears. I was overwhelmed. All I could say was, “Gracias, gracias, I’m fine, I’m fine. I’ve been at home. It was a friend who was killed, not me. I knew him a bit.” They asked me about Brad and I told them what I knew. They thought about his family and hoped that theUSAwould now apply pressure on the Mexican government to resolve the situation here. “Now, the governor really has to go,” said some. And, today, Saturday, federal forces are again gathering at the airport military base, arriving in six massive troop transport planes.

Wrenching myself away, apologizing and saying I had to take care of some things for Brad, I walked to the end of the block and pulled my phone out again. First, I called Daniela at the Anglo-Mexican foundation in Mexico City, who I knew had close ties to the British embassy. “Just tell them that if they hear that I’m dead, it’s not true.” She also gave me a US embassy emergency number, which I dialed after hanging up.

Some embassy operator guy answered. “My name is John Dickie, I am a British journalist in Oaxaca and I’m calling because an American journalist was just shot and killed here.” The guy’s tone of voice immediately pissed me off.

“Who do you work for’”

“What does it matter who I work for’ITN, for fuck’s sake.”

“So, who do you want to talk to’”

“You tell me, man! Whoever the fuck you think I should talk to about a dead American journalist!”

Robert Zimmerman, the deputy head of the press office, came on the line. He was more helpful. I told him the story and gave him Brad’s full name. They had not received word yet.

“There is no authority in Oaxaca right now,” I said, “so you probably won’t hear anything. I am sending you the word.” He was skeptical because I hadn’t seen the body. Fair point. But I had spoken to witnesses and had seen the photos already.

“I’m on the way to the morgue. Call me in half an hour.”

Then I called the US consul in Oaxaca - an aloof prick - and left a message. Then I called another friend who knew Brad, to accompany me to the morgue. Victor and Bermudez, two local journalist friends, also came. We left the roadblock in a convoy of motorcycles. This wasn’t too clever considering paramilitary hitmen ride around on motorbikes, so theAPPOis very wary of groups of bikers. Plus, we were going to have to negotiate our way through the city center. Victor led us along a safe route. We did not see a single car.

Arriving at the morgue, where I know some of the staff, we went over to greet the head forensic doctor - they call him Dr. Muerte. He let us in to see Brad; I won’t describe the operating theater. Once inside, standing next to the cold stone slab, which I had so often filmed for a documentary the year before, I was now faced with a body I had known in life; every crime journalist’s worst nightmare. I nodded gently. It was, indeed, Bradley Roland Will. His brown eyes were wide open, staring straight through me, into infinity. His chest was sown up, but the bullet hole was obvious. I didn’t linger. Dr. Death put his arm around my shoulder and escorted me outside, where he showed me the two 9mm bullet tips he had removed from Brad’s chest. I wondered why he had them in the pocket of his white coat.

Outside, Brad’s roomates, an Indymedia colleague, a Spanish photographer, and a Human Rights worker, were gathered. We all spoke for a while. They had been with Brad at the time. A pick-up truck had burst through a barricade and several men had opened fire on the “protesters.” Brad had been at the front of the pack, hit from around 30 metres away. They had also been fired on from rooftops. The gunmen have since been identified from press photographs and video stills as local police, and have supposedly been handed over to the ‘authorities.’ The shooters hadn’t covered their faces; in Oaxaca, when you are the law, impunity is a sport.

The morgue people told us they could not do an official identification without Brad’s passport and the consul present. We decided his roommate would take care of it in the morning.

At around midnight, we rode again through the night streets, back to the barricade. I stayed up for another couple of hours at the roadblock before heading down the street to Diablo’s spare room. Before going to bed, Chiricuto and I watched the news.Televisashowed uncut footage of the shootings and of Brad’s death. It was gruesome to watch. But the most gruesome part was listening to the presenter saying the shots were fired by “neighbors” who are tired of the conflict and who have turned against theAPPO. In Mexico, the extent of political influence is unbounded.

Sixteen hours after the White Owl appeared, I stood on the balcony with Jonathan, and we recalled a local saying:

“Cuando la lechuza vuela, El indio muere.”

“When the White Owl flies, the Indian dies.”

The White Owl had appeared at exactly the time of Brad’s death. No doubt we would never see it again. Because there was no White Owl, and now there is one less Indian in the world of the living.

As for Brad and me, our destinies divided. I stayed here. He was called back.

At least it looks like Bradley Roland Will’s death may help bring an end to this conflict, because, after five months of complete apathy, the federal government looks like it has been moved to act, finally sending in the federal police to restore public security. Did George W. have a quiet word with Fox’ Probably. And for helping set off this chain of events, Brad and his family can be proud. However, whether a sudden federal incursion will solve the problem remains to be seen. Tomorrow we might know. TheAPPOwon’t move until the governor is removed from office. But the everyday folk of Oaxaca deserve to at least be allowed to live in a secure environment, regardless of their allegiance. What is certain is that the rotten apple that is local government culture in southern Mexico needs to be ripped clean from its throat. It will doubtlessly take several generations.

Finally, the question has to be asked: does a gringo always have to die for the world to act’

Les routes de la cocaïne (Jeune Afrique)
Plus de 40 kg de cocaïne pure ont été saisis par la police marocaine depuis le début de 2006, lors d’opérations menées notamment à Oujda, Rabat et Casablanca - soit le volume le plus important jamais réalisé dans le pays. À l’origine de cet afflux subit de poudre blanche dans le royaume, l’arrivée clandestine il y a un an de 2 tonnes de cocaïne dans le port mauritanien de Nouadhibou, par les soins de la filière colombienne. Sept cents kilos auraient depuis pris la destination du Maroc, afin d’être exportés vers l’Europe via l’Espagne, le reste de la cargaison étant exfiltré vers l’Algérie, la Tunisie et la Libye. Au Maroc, les trafiquants utilisent des filières identiques à celles du cannabis, mais les rapports entre locaux et Colombiens sont souvent sanglants. Trois Colombiens et trois Marocains ont été ainsi assassinés cette année, victimes de règlements de comptes.

You Can’t Keep A Bad Scheme Down (Business Week)
The spyware scourge is only getting worse. (…) Easy profits are attracting more sinister operators. Last August, police in Morocco, armed with intelligence from U.S. authorities, arrested Farid Essebar on suspicion of creating “worms,” malicious programs designed to cripple computers. The FBI believes that Essebar, 24, created the worms, known as Mytob and Zotob, that last summer gummed up thousands of PCs in U.S. congressional offices, at The New York Times, and at industrial equipment manufacturer Caterpillar Inc. (CAT ), among other companies. Code written into the Zotob worm lowered PCs’ security settings, allowing spyware to download more easily to those computers. Essebar was paid as much as 6 cents per installation by spyware operators, according to British e-mail security firm MessageLabs Ltd. FBI officials say Essebar was recently released, although he has been charged with credit-card fraud in Morocco. He couldn’t be reached for comment. As one alarming spyware scheme gets shut down, another one crops up, according to Jeremy Pickett, security practices manager at Sana Security Inc. in San Mateo, Calif., adding: “There is still more suffering to come.”

Photos Paris-Match : L’épopée de l’Indépendance (Le Journal Hebdo)
Elles ont la gravité épique que donne l’Histoire à ses acteurs, héros ou simples anonymes. Les photos de Paris Match, prises entre 1949 et 1961, témoignent, avec l’éloquente pudeur du noir et blanc, de la lutte du Maroc pour son indépendance. Un personnage central : Mohammed Ben Youssef, futur Mohammed V. Cette exposition est l’histoire d’une genèse. Pas seulement celle d’un sultan en exil qui deviendra roi, mais aussi celle d’un peuple. D’une cause. Ainsi aux côtés de la splendide photo du sultan pris de dos au balcon de son palais, faisant face à la place noire de monde, pour prononcer le fameux discours de Tanger, celle d’une femme, dite « la Pasionaria », saisie par l’objectif de M. Descamps à Meknès, telle une « Liberté guidant le peuple ». Ainsi cette femme anonyme, immortalisée par D. Camus, sortant d’une voiture son visage couvert d’un austère litham pour brandir le drapeau du Maroc. Ces photos sont des portraits, emblématiques des mouvements de foule lors des grands événements, le discours de Tanger, le peuple de Fès soulevé lors du 1er anniversaire de la déposition du sultan, l’annonce de son retour, ses funérailles où se multiplient les pleureuses. Puis les reporters de Paris Match prennent du recul et témoignent de la réalité sociale du pays : photos d’écolières, scènes de rue… La force de ces images tient à l’empathie réelle qu’on y décèle entre les sujets et les photographes. L’émotion d’un regard volé ou d’une silhouette amènent Carone, Courriere, Jarnoux, Descamps, Pagès, De Segonzac, Camus, Slade, etc… à prendre du recul par rapport à l’histoire officielle pour rejoindre l’Histoire par le biais de la mémoire.K.S.

Hassan Benjelloun donne cette semaine à Casa le premier clap de son septième long métrage : Le Bar, qui se déroule “Chez Pierre”, à Bejaâd, pose la délicate question de l’exode des Marocains juifs dans les années 60, un “non-dit” que le réalisateur de La Chambre noire (2005) souhaite bousculer : “J’ai grandi à Settat, dans une rue où vivaient dix familles musulmanes et juives. Du jour au lendemain, ces dernières sont parties”. Hassan Benjelloun épingle “le fossé créé par le Protectorat”. Avec un budget de sept millions de dirhams, Le Bar, où l’on retrouve Hassan Sqalli, raconte l’histoire de Shalom, vieux musicien juif qu’une bande de bons vivants entend bien faire rester au bled pour sauver leur bar des prêches hargneux de l’imam voisin, la loi stipulant qu’aucun débit d’alcool ne peut être fermé tant qu’un non- musulman est dans le coin.

Garden-party contre les « barbus » (Le Journal Hebdo)
« Les islamistes ont leurs amis pour financer les campagnes électorales de leurs candidats, par contre, les démocrates, eux, n’ont personne et ne comptent que sur leurs propres et faibles moyens ». Ce mot d’ordre a été lancé par un aréopage de personnalités de la bonne société casablancaise en conclave dînatoire le 21 juin dernier dans les jardins d’une villa huppée du quartier d’Anfa. Au menu, petits fours, sushis et boissons diverses servis par un personnel en livrée. Les convives, essentiellement des affiliés ou sympathisants de l’USFP dont l’« invité-vedette » fut Ali Bouabid n’ont ménagé aucun effort pour « exhorter les modernistes à délier leur bourse et souder leurs rangs ». Nezha Chekrouni, Omar Belal du PPS , qui n’a pas omis de préciser avoir rédigé « une thèse sur les islamistes », Kamil Benjelloun de la CGEM. Abdelmalek Kettani, président délégué d’Alternatives et PDG de Galaxy Electronics, Sabah Chraibi, l’inoxydable M’jid, Réda Lemrini, et bien d’autres comme la championne olympique Nawal Moutawakil étaient aussi de la partie. Pour l’association « 2007, Daba », le publiciste Noureddine Ayouche et le sociologue Layadi ont fait la promo de leur mouvement. Les conciliabules sur l’herbe et aux abords de la piscine se sont articulés autour de plusieurs axes : participer aux prochaines élections, mobiliser les gens pour voter, combattre les islamistes, voire leur “montée en puissance” (c’est selon les avis) , rejoindre les partis “démocratiques”, ou tout au moins voter pour eux malgré leurs faiblesses et malgré leurs “défauts”. Deux frères au coeur des OPA (LeMonde.fr)
Lundi 26 juin. Luxembourg. Arcelor et Mittal Steel annoncent au monde leur mariage après cinq mois d’une guerre sans concession. L’ambiance est glaciale. Deux hommes s’embrassent : les frères Zaoui - Michael, 49 ans, et Yoël, 45 ans - se retrouvent “dans le même camp” après cette longue bagarre. Le premier travaille pour la banque d’affaires Morgan Stanley et a conseillé Arcelor, le second oeuvre chez Goldman Sachs et s’est battu aux côtés de Mittal. Tous deux chapeautent, pour leur boutique, les activités de fusions et acquisitions en Europe.Même père, même mère, même métier. Pourtant il n’y a là rien de génétique. Le père - prénom Charles - fut directeur de cabinet de plusieurs ministres au Maroc, son pays d’origine, avant d’être directeur d’administration centrale à Rabat, puis de rejoindre l’organisation des Nations unies pour l’alimentation et l’agriculture (FAO) à Rome et l’Unesco à Paris. Et le troisième frère, Dan, 47 ans, est cadre commercial.De là à en déduire qu’il s’agit d’un pur hasard… Sans doute pas. Jacques Attali les connaît bien - “On dîne régulièrement mon frère Bernard, les deux Zaoui et moi. On appelle ça les dîners de A à Z” - et juge que “s’ils ont si bien réussi dans un environnement si particulier”, celui de la banque d’affaires américaine, c’est qu’ils possèdent une ossature commune : “Un très grand sérieux, une très grande fiabilité.”"Ils sont tous deux très imaginatifs”, ajoute l’avocat Jean-Michel Darrois. On leur doit, entre autres, la stratégie du Pac Man (du nom d’un jeu vidéo), quand Elf pour se défendre contre Total a voulu lancer une contre-offensive sur son assaillant. “Ils possèdent également une très grande intelligence des situations et des hommes”, complète François Henrot, associé gérant à la Banque Rothschild. Pour convaincre Lakshmi Mittal de revoir complètement son offre sur Arcelor - le prix comme la gouvernance -, il aura fallu un grand doigté à Yoël.Pour leur mère, Violette, comme pour eux, la figure du père, qui “adorait” ses enfants, est au coeur de leur ossature. “Il a été un exemple de rigueur, d’intégrité, et de largesse d’esprit”, juge-t-elle. “Il était visionnaire”, ajoutent les deux fils qui, pendant des années, lui ont téléphoné tous les jours. Ils évoquent son goût des autres et de l’étranger. De Rabat à Rome, de Rome à Paris, il leur fallait poursuivre le voyage.D’abord aux Etats-Unis. Pour Charles, cela ne se discute pas : Michael fera Harvard. Il le lui dit, alors qu’il a à peine 15 ans et se rêve chef d’orchestre. On est en juillet 1972 : “Mon père m’a accompagné à l’Elysée, où Pompidou recevait les lauréats du concours général.” Michael fera Harvard, après Sciences Po et la London School of Economics. Yoël, qui, petit, voulait être médecin, préférera Stanford et la Californie, après HEC.Une très grande exigence paternelle donc. Doublée d’une extrême vigilance de la mère. “J’avais moins de 7 ans, nous vivions au Maroc, se souvient Michael, je rentrais de l’école. Ma mère m’a demandé comment s’était passée la dictée. J’étais deuxième. Elle me l’a fait refaire vingt fois dans la cuisine.”Et Yoël ? Il est plus pudique, plus discret, moins souple en apparence. “Plus anglais, alors que Michael est plus italien”, commente Anne Méaux, qui dirige l’agence de communication Image sept. “Yoël est plus spontané, plus direct, plus juvénile, Michael est plus secondaire, et finalement plus secret”, corrige François Henrot. Mais le benjamin a assurément la même marque de fabrique que son frère. “Mon père a été très important comme guide”, reconnaît-il.Tous deux évoquent leur deuil récent - le père est décédé le 23 février - et leur tristesse infinie. En pleine bagarre Mittal-Arcelor, ils se sont coupés du monde pendant huit jours pour accompagner cette mort, comme le veut la religion juive. Aujourd’hui, ils disent leur désir de transmettre à leurs enfants - chacun a une fille et un garçon - les valeurs paternelles. Ils ont tous deux épousé des femmes d’origine méditerranéenne - du Maroc pour celle de Michael, de Tunisie pour celle de Yoël - qui les y aident. “L’aîné a dû influencer le benjamin”, réfléchit Violette quand on lui parle des carrières parallèles de ses deux fils. Yoël minimise. Michael aussi. Mais il ne peut s’empêcher de parler de son “petit frère”.”AUCUNE PLACE À L’ÉMOTION”Enfant, Yoël joue plus avec Dan. De quatre ans son aîné, Michael a deux ans d’avance à l’école. Il faut attendre la fin de leurs études pour les voir se rapprocher. On est en 1988. A Wall Street, c’est l’effervescence. Yoël vient d’entrer chez Goldman Sachs et Michael travaille chez Morgan Stanley depuis 1986. Pendant un an, à New York, les deux Zaoui partagent un appartement. Ils récidiveront deux ans à Londres, où ils sont partis développer le business européen de leurs maisons.Morgan Stanley-Goldman Sachs : les deux banques sont incontournables dans les affaires. Et concurrentes sur de nombreux deals. Michael et Yoël savent que, tôt ou tard, ils seront sur les mêmes dossiers, peut-être du même bord, mais pas forcément. Ils doivent être irréprochables. Etudiant, Yoël a fait un stage chez Morgan Stanley, où il devait être noté par son frère, qui en a décliné la responsabilité.A leurs débuts londoniens, les Zaoui se donnent donc deux règles - “notre protocole”, dit Yoël. La première, c’est de ne jamais se parler de leurs opérations. “Quand Michael voyage, je ne dis pas à Yoël où il est. Et inversement”, raconte Violette. Qui poursuit : “Papa disait toujours que leur relation ne serait pas gâchée par leur travail.” Jusqu’ici, il a eu raison. Les deux frères s’aiment profondément.La seconde règle - ne pas s’affronter dans des opérations hostiles - ne résiste pas à l’usage. Et saute en 2003. Morgan Stanley conseille Alcan, qui attaque Pechiney, défendu par Goldman Sachs. “Quand Pechiney l’a mandaté, Yoël m’a demandé : “Qu’est-ce qu’on fait maintenant ?” Je lui ai dit : “On y va”. Au stade où nous étions, nous ne pouvions plus exclure de notre champ d’action une catégorie de transactions, les hostiles”, raconte Michael.Zaoui contre Zaoui, acte 1. L’affaire est bouclée en six semaines. “Yoël et Michael défendent leurs clients avec beaucoup de conviction. Mais ils se connaissent par coeur et se font une grande confiance. Ce qui leur interdit de jouer au poker ensemble. Et les aide à trouver le bon moment pour se parler”, estime Jean-Pierre Rodier, qui était alors PDG de Pechiney. Les deux frères s’en sortent indemnes. “Les affaires sont les affaires. Je ne laisse aucune place à l’émotion”, poursuit Michael. Yoël ne dit pas autre chose. Et quand ils sont vraiment trop absorbés par leurs dossiers, un dîner chez les parents - sans femmes ni enfants - leur remet la tête sur les épaules.Mittal-Arcelor va une deuxième fois les opposer. Sans conséquence, affirment-ils. Si ce n’est qu’ils n’ont pas eu le temps, entre le travail et la maladie de leur père, de déjeuner juste tous les deux pour fêter Noël, comme ils le font chaque année. “C’est prévu pour juillet”, sourit Yoël.L’avenir les verra encore s’affronter. Le roi, les islamistes et le Sahara (Jeune Afrique)
par FRANÇOIS SOUDANTandis que Mohammed VI fait du social, cheikh Yassine teste la résistance des autorités à un an des législatives, et les provinces du Sud - presque - unanimes savourent leur nouveau statut d’autonomie.Soleil voilé et lumière humide : journée ordinaire, à Rabat, en cette fin du mois de juin. Les touristes arrivent par petits groupes, en attendant la noria des charters de juillet. Peu de choses à lire dans la presse, si ce n’est cette étrange polémique, à longueur de colonnes, entre « makhzéniens » et « nihilistes », journalistes proches du pouvoir et critiques pavloviens du régime. La controverse envahit et contamine tout, de l’élection du patron des patrons à l’inauguration d’un musée à la gloire d’un maréchal défunt, ancien « moro » de l’armée franquiste, en passant par le contenu des programmes de télévision. Surtout, ne pas s’y arrêter, au risque de suffoquer d’ennui !Pourtant, sous les eaux dormantes de ce début d’été émollient, s’agitent bien des courants : islamistes, Sahara, diplômés chômeurs, morchidate (prédicatrices), perspectives électorales… La rentrée de septembre, assure-t-on, sera brûlante, avec, en ligne de mire, les législatives de 2007. Dans ce pays où l’on n’aime rien tant que jouer à se faire peur, tout change donc pour que rien ne bouge, à moins que ce ne soit l’inverse. Ainsi va le Maroc.M6 : « Morocco first »Pendant ce temps-là, que fait le roi ? Du social, son activité favorite. Ce 22 juin, à Rabat, Mohammed VI préside le conseil d’administration de la Fondation Mohammed V pour la solidarité. Une grosse machine caritative dotée d’un budget de 300 millions de dirhams (27,16 millions d’euros) dont toutes les actions profitent aux plus démunis.Pendant des heures, le roi discute crayons, cartables, centres de soins, handicapés, accès à l’eau potable, foyers pour jeunes filles rurales, restos du c”ur et opérations à prévoir pendant le mois de ramadan, qui commence fin septembre. « Il épluche tous les dossiers et pose des questions sur tout », raconte l’un des participants.Pour le fils de Hassan II, rien ne compte davantage que de réduire l’énorme fracture sociale qui lézarde la « maison Maroc », une obsession, un quasi-plein temps qui laisse peu de place à la politique, qu’elle soit politicienne ou extérieure. Là où son père s’efforçait, avec des résultats d’ailleurs très inégaux, de faire exister le Maroc sur la scène internationale - en particulier au Proche-Orient -, lui se replie sur le royaume, son petit peuple et ses grandes inégalités. « Chaque fois ou presque qu’apparaît un conflit entre l’État et les gens, et qu’il doit le trancher, le roi tranche en faveur des gens. En ce sens, il est beaucoup plus le petit-fils de Mohammed V que le fils de Hassan II », explique l’un de ses proches collaborateurs.Certes, le politique n’est jamais loin, et ce populisme royal, cette impression d’être en campagne électorale permanente que donne un homme a priori au-dessus de toute contingence élective peuvent être interprétés comme un moyen de tirer le tapis sous les pieds des islamistes. N’y voir que ce simple calcul serait pourtant une erreur. Le social et l’humanitaire sont les deux passions d’un roi persuadé que ce qui menace le plus l’avenir du royaume c’est, justement, son déficit béant en la matière. Et puis, le peuple, le contact, les mains que l’on touche, M6 aime.« Il ne se passe pas de jour sans que je m’arrache les cheveux, confie un responsable de sa sécurité. Sans prévenir, Sa Majesté se met au volant d’un véhicule, en général décapotable, et, suivi d’une voiture avec trois gardes du corps, se perd dans les quartiers populaires de Casa ou d’ailleurs. » Pas de motards ni de gyrophares. M6 s’arrête aux feux rouges, descend, salue, prend le thé dans une gargote, puis repart.Régulièrement, lorsqu’il est en voyage, le roi éprouve ainsi le brusque besoin de rompre avec le programme officiel et de balayer le protocole pour aller à la rencontre des « vrais gens ». À Rio de Janeiro, à Alger, à Dakar, à Libreville, à Niamey, à New York, à Brazzaville, des passants médusés l’ont croisé, à toute heure du jour ou de la nuit, en des lieux improbables. Dans la capitale congolaise, le propriétaire de l’hôtel Olympic se souvient encore l’avoir vu débouler, un soir, pour lui emprunter sa voiture. Suivi par une cohorte affolée de gardes du corps locaux et marocains qu’il s’est amusé à semer, Mohammed VI s’est ensuite perdu dans Poto Poto et Makelekele, obligé de demander son chemin à des quidams, dont certains étaient peut-être des malfrats en goguette !Des histoires comme celle-là, Fouad Ali El Himma, ministre délégué à l’Intérieur et sans doute le plus proche collaborateur du monarque, en a par dizaines. Mais il en est une, récente et significative de la popularité intacte dont jouit Mohammed VI sept ans après son accession au trône, que son condisciple du Collège royal aime à raconter.C’était il y a quelques mois, du côté d’Ifrane. Avec quelques amis, M6 marche dans la forêt sur un sentier de randonnée. On croise des promeneurs en ballade, on s’arrête, on discute un peu, puis on se sépare. Soudain, une jeune fille fait demi-tour et revient en courant vers le roi. « Majesté, je n’ai rien à vous demander pour moi, dit-elle, un peu essoufflée, mais ma ville de Taza se meurt. Alors, s’il vous plaît, venez nous rendre visite et tout va changer. » Quand on lui rapporte certaines remarques à propos de son manque de visibilité sur la scène internationale, Mohammed VI répond invariablement : « Ma maison d’abord. » « Morocco first », en quelque sorte. Et Taza avant Gaza…Islamistes : en attendant le grand soirSi Mohammed VI aura 43 ans en août, et donc, si Dieu le veut, toute une vie de règne devant lui, cheikh Abdessalam Yassine, lui, n’a plus de temps à perdre. Le guide du mouvement islamiste Justice et bienfaisance a 80 ans et des soucis pulmonaires. Entre son existence d’ascète et l’univers des « M6 boys » - jeans, tee-shirts, musique new age et Internet à gogo -, il y a tout un monde, deux conceptions du Maroc qui se frottent, se heurtent, dialoguent parfois, mais ne se rencontrent pas.Après avoir prophétisé que 2006 serait l’année du soulèvement, le cheikh a remisé au placard son rêve de scénario à l’iranienne, avec dix millions de fidèles dans les rues, au profit d’une méthode de testing bien plus réaliste. Afin de peser sur les législatives de 2007, d’accroître son audience et de provoquer le pouvoir, Justice et bienfaisance a lancé, fin mai, une opération Portes ouvertes à travers tout le Maroc. En l’occurrence, il s’agit de multiplier les réunions aux domiciles de cadres de l’association, au cours desquelles on explique, devant un parterre de militants et de recrues potentielles (cela va de la vingtaine à la centaine de participants), les objectifs d’Al Adl Wal Ihsane. Cet activisme, joint à la publication d’un sondage pour le moins spécieux accordant 47 % des voix aux islamistes modérés du Parti de la justice et du développement (PJD) lors des prochaines législatives (l’estimation de 20 % semble beaucoup plus proche de la réalité), a fait souffler un vent de panique dans les salons bourgeois.L’autorité a donc dû réagir. Dès qu’une réunion est signalée, la police intervient, disperse les participants, interpelle les organisateurs et leur fait savoir que la ligne rouge qui sépare les activités d’une association tolérée de ­celles d’un parti politique reconnu (Justice et bienfaisance, qui n’a jamais voulu se transformer en parti, appartient à la première catégorie) a été franchie. À la clé, une menace : celle de poser des scellés sur les domiciles où sont organisés ces happenings d’un genre un peu particulier. En un mois et à raison de cinq à dix mini-meetings interrompus par jour, près d’un millier de membres d’Al Adl Wal Ihsane ont ainsi été brièvement arrêtés. Sans violence, mais parfois à la limite de la crise de nerfs, le bras de fer continue.Cet affrontement feutré entre le pouvoir et les islamistes en recouvre un autre, plus dur et beaucoup moins médiatique. Il oppose quotidiennement les services de sécurité et de renseignements aux réseaux clandestins salafistes, ultraminoritaires, mais disposant d’une capacité presque infinie à renaître avec, à chaque fois, de parfaits inconnus à leur tête. Environ cent cinquante Marocains opéreraient actuellement en Irak au sein d’al-Qaïda (dont l’un était très proche d’Abou Moussab al-Zarqaoui), soit la deuxième communauté maghrébine après les Algériens. Les deux tiers sont issus des rangs de l’émigration marocaine en Europe, les autres proviennent directement du royaume. Le djihad irakien n’est cependant pas le seul terrain d’entraînement de ces islamistes radicaux : l’Algérie voisine fournit un théâtre beaucoup plus accessible. Parmi les dix-neuf membres d’une cellule de la Salafia Jihadia récemment démantelée à Salé (parmi lesquels sept mineurs), près de la moitié avaient été interceptés par les policiers algériens au-delà de la frontière, alors qu’ils étaient en route pour les maquis du Groupe salafiste pour la prédication et le combat (GSPC). Les Algériens les ont ensuite remis à leurs collègues marocains, preuve que, si elle paraît durablement gelée dans les domaines politique, économique et culturel, la coopération entre les deux « frères » fonctionne au moins au niveau sécuritaire. L’islamiste armé, c’est l’ennemi suprême.Sahara : le modèle catalanAprès le dernier rapport, très favorable au Maroc, de Kofi Annan, le secrétaire général de l’ONU, l’adoption le 18 juin du nouveau statut d’autonomie élargie de la province espagnole de Catalogne a conforté les dirigeants marocains dans ce qui est désormais « leur » solution pour le Sahara occidental : l’autonomie, toute l’autonomie, rien que l’autonomie. Comme en Catalogne, l’ancienne colonie espagnole aura son statut, son Parlement, son gouvernement local, ses prérogatives judiciaires, administratives et fiscales, le tout coiffé par la couronne royale. Tel est le projet, répété à satiété, auquel adhèrent la quasi-totalité des Marocains et la plupart des partenaires majeurs de la région - Français, Américains, Espagnols - tant la perspective d’un nouvel État indépendant au Maghreb apparaît désormais chimérique.Reste que, pour l’instant, ce projet n’existe qu’au sommet. Créé il y a quelques mois, le Conseil royal consultatif pour les affaires sahariennes (Corcas) est certes un bel objet, plutôt représentatif des tribus locales et loin des simples courroies de transmission du Makhzen d’antan, mais il lui reste à faire ses preuves auprès des populations.Une fraction, minoritaire mais turbulente, des Sahraouis continue en effet de profiter du desserrement de l’étau policier et administratif pour afficher sa dissidence, voire son séparatisme.
